What do you buy at international markets / grocery stores of different cultures?

Coming soon: a tip will be required to get a receipt

I vaguely remember Watertown having a couple of Armenian stores.

When in New Jersey, I would visit Taşkin Bakery in Paterson for Turkish bread and desserts.

I also would go to Mitsuwa Marketplace in Edgewater, but it’s rubbish compared to its former self years ago.

Watertown, Mass., bordering Cambridge, Belmont, Allston neighborhood of Boston, and Newton, has several Armenian food stores and is also very close to Sophia’s Greek food store in Belmont.

Come to the Boston area - no cashier has ever asked me that!

I lived in Tucson for a couple of years about 20 yrs ago. It would drive me bonkers when I would drop in a store to get some cream for my coffee BEFORE I even had a cup - and was constantly asked - IN THE AISLES even - if I needed help.

Love these stores! I used to live walking distance to Arax. The olive bar and cookies were such a treat… the fresh breads and seasonal fruits, veggies… and herbs.

Sadly, my son has since been diagnosed as celiac, and since I keep a gluten free household for his protection, we can’t buy the herbs, spices and any cookies will be for my sneak-treat.

I use Google Translate a lot. I was kind of impressed with the accuracy of the app in Italy, more so in Greece. Now I am pretty tickled that it works just as well in Iceland. I may be kind of provincial, but an app that works on Icelandic is pretty darned impressive.
Now if it works on Hungarian or Korean I will be even more impressed!

I was using it in Japan.

I get asked “did you find everything today” at Boston area Trader Joe’s stores all the time. Not anywhere else, however.

Upthread, I mentioned Manchester’s “curry mile” which, these days, really should be renamed the “kebab kilometre”. I forgot to mention Syria Sweets which pretty much exclusively makes and sells different varieties of baklava. When I visit, I ask for them to make me up a small selection of about a dozen pieces.

They also supply wholesale quantities to various Middle Eastern and Eastern Mediterranean food shops.

Which is quite literally what jammy wrote in their post.

I recently found some frozen curry leaves and a package of achiote paste at two ’ international’ markets in our area. One market is relatively new, the other long established. I guess, as our valley grows in population, we will see more shops with a variety of world tastes.

I discovered the Sadaf brand grilled eggplant, which provides a fabulous shortcut for any dishes that use them, i.e. melitsanosalata, baba ganoush et al.

With your penchant for Middle Eastern/Mediterranean foods/flavors, you MAY have use for this website. There’s a zillion things I’d like to order from them, but haven’t bitten the bullet yet!
