What are your thoughts on Padma’s new cooking competition?

Will you be watching?

Will be interesting to see how it goes. Names I’m familiar with - Beverly Kim and Buddha Lo (although I didn’t watch his TC seasons).

Beverly had a Michelin star… so there, Dalllas season bitches! I saw,the Buddha season. Not the best.

zilch.

there is no actionable information or teaching - it’s nothing more than a game show.

I’m a sucker for a good cooking show that is not too gimicky (and no Gordon Ramsaye-sque screamy or faux too perfectionist personality). I don’t have Paramount+ and don’t intend to subscribe for this, so I’ll just read about any results online.

Streams on Paramount; but also premieres on regular CBS on 3/4 at 9:30 p.m.

Good to know. Will DVR that first episode.

So many chef cooking shows/competitions. And a core group of chefs keep showing up everywhere. Probably give this a pass. Watching top chef, great British menu and tournament of champions (yes I fast forward when Guy F is babbling on and on). After the Noma debacle I would like background checks done on every chef I like. Kidding not kidding.

Finally caught up on this show. Like the big name chefs that they pulled in, but kind of bummed that with the set up of this tournament, a good chunk are already gone! Those are some of the chefs that I would have loved to see what they could do. If they didn’t need that many chefs, I would have rather they just start with a smaller number, and then give them a real shot at going through each of the challenges to demonstrate their “mastery”.

Not enough cooking yet, but “it’s early days”, so I will keep watching.

I’ll take that list and raise it one with “Master Chef: Professional”

Probably not how that saying goes :person_shrugging:t5:

It’s fine. I found it interesting that they were promoting it as (paraphrased) “a cooking competition like nothing you’ve seen before” . . . . but it is essentially the same as top chef in almost every way so far. So that seems strange to me. I’m also curious why Padma left Top Chef, to do a Top Chef show. Money I’m sure, but it doesn’t exactly “expand” her “brand” (embarrassed that I’m using those words).

The chefs on the new show also have a lot of experience, for sure. But given the same restrictions as Top Chef (ingredients, time, equipment, etc) and not being able to taste the actual final food . . . the end results seem the same as on Top Chef. So I’m not sure the experience of watching the two shows is really any different.

I’ll watch a few more and see if I stay with it. Watching that and Top Chef at the same time is a little too much “cooking competition” for me.

So true.

Need to check that out although I may be reaching my chef competition show limit. I do like great British menu because it’s new chefs and not the same 20 chefs that circulate between these shows based in the US.

Also struck by how much more I like Kristen Kish as host on Top Chef. Her experience being a contestant on the show really shines through. Nothing against Padma but I do think it was a good change.

Watched the first episode and decided that was enough. Padma seems so full of herself that I just can’t continue watching. I’d much rather spend my limited cooking competition attention span on Top Chef and Kristen Kish.

Check out the skills tests starting around 1:24 and 15.20

I saw the first episode thanks to this thread. Have to agree. They zoomed through the food parts, which is what’s of interest to me.

But this is a network tv reality show, so maybe expectations need to be adjusted.

I haven’t watched this clip but Monica’s facial expressions are priceless when the contestants are really messing up.

Padma was fun on Top Chef, but she’s not particularly knowledgeable and doesn’t have the presence to carry a show. I think, in general, except for good-natured classics like British Bake-Off, food TV is dying. It’s probably time.

She needs Tom. This is the third episode I’ve watched. Boring.
