Actually there was a good reason for this. It’s called “Bank Faced”. Banks used to refuse large cash deposits if the bills were all willy-nilly. It was easier to spot counterfeit bills and catch the errors in denominations put in the wrong spot in the till when reconciling at night. Now that there are counting machines even the banks give out bills facing every which way.
Which I promptly face correctly.
