I find McCormick’s “Gourmet” line to be pretty respectable. But mostly I go to Penzey’s for online or to local Asian/Indian markets for spices, as their turnover ensures more freshness.
I use the shallot pepper mix when I microwave peas and pearl onions together from the freezer - no water added. Once the veggies are done, I stir in butter and mix in the seasoning. Makes a nice side to mashed potatoes/winter squash and poultry/pot pies esp. in the winter. My husband loves peas and I love easy, so we tend to eat this a lot. Good on steamed carrots, also with butter. Nice in soft scrambled eggs…
We also have the half-sharp on hand as well for occasional use – that was an abbreviated list. Recently we needed some cumin so I just picked some up at Trader Joe’s. The following week Penzey’s had a small jar of theirs on sale for $2, so I ordered it. After comparing, I threw away the TJ bottle!
We call that a metric s***-ton, which is somewhat larger than a regular ton.
Pretty hard to beat Penzey’s even through other reputable vendors. Penzey’s always smells and tastes stronger and fresher IMO.
Thanks for the tips! We eat a lot of eggs, so we’ll definitely give that a try.
I’m lucky enough to live within a 5 minute walk to my local Penzey’s in Arlington MA. My almost 5-year old son (“Spring onion” in Hungry Onion-speak) loves accompanying me - they have a cute corner with a pirate ship where small folk can draw to their hearts’ content.
Ohhhh, that would be dangerous for me! LOL When I lived in Woburn, I could make the run to Arlington easily enough. Now that I’m closer to the NH border, it’s more difficult. So I just go with the online ordering.
I used to get all my spices from Penzey’s, and still, do when the online price is right, but now favor Whole Spice in Napa, especially when I’m in the neighborhood . Not sure if they have much of an on line presence.
They used to have a lot more salt choices when Penzey’s did not, but Penzey’s seems to be offering salt choices too. My favorite is extra bold smoked sea salt.
