What are your favorite sandwich / sammich / sanguich combos?

It’s listed under Sandwiches or Hand Helds in Canada, too.

I love Choripan, too.

I remember the Zeppole.

The only sandwich I can remember offhand that I didn’t like was the chopped liver bagel sandwich at Schmaltz Appetizing.

Too gamy?

Oh sabich is absolutely one of my favourites

I didn’t like Schmaltz Appetizing’s chopped liver. I like liverwurst, pâté and Sarge’s chopped liver. The Schmaltz Appetizing chopped liver was bitter to me.

I think it was just not the kind of chopped liver I like.

The Chub Chub at Schmaltz Appetizing is delicious.

Looks like Schmaltz Appetizing stopped selling their chopped liver sandwich.

Remembering some more “sandwiches” I’ve enjoyed in my travels (and some of them I often make at home):

  • Drei im Weggla: little sausages in a roll, a typical snack in Nürnberg.
  • Thüringer Rostbratwurst: Thuringian grilled sausage. The roll-sausage ratio is comical.
  • Leberkäse Brötchen: meatloaf in a crusty Kaiser (or Pretzel) roll. Another a typical snack in Bavaria.
  • Strammer Max/Otto
  • Mettbrötchen: raw pork sandwich, or on a slice of bread. I have only eaten this in Germany.
  • Tartarbrötchen: same as above but with raw beef.

I sometimes make Schmalz as part of “Brotzeit” (all sorts of stuff to put on bread for a long weekend lunch). And then there is this super simple thing consisting of 3 ingredients (so they’d better be good quality): bread, butter, roe.

  • Torta Ahogada: “drown sandwich”. Most popular meat sandwich in Guadalajara. I ate it a few times there. Also comes with prawns. There are many types of “torta” in Mexico but “ahogada” arrives on a deep plate drenched in a (tomato?) sauce/broth.

Sandwiches are super popular in Chile, many are monstrous, loaded with mashed avocado and mayonnaise. I had to remember to tell them at time of ordering “sin mayonesa, por favor”. In Valdivia there’s a raw beef sandwich called “Crudo Valdiviano” (via the Germans. Chilean Pantagonia has a lot of Germans and Swiss who were invited by Chilean government to immigrate there to help develop the country).

  • Smoked meat sandwiches in Montreal
  • Kaya toast (Malaysia)

Does Dakos qualify? At home I simply toast the bread. Rusk is too hard.

When I make it to Sicily again I must try the offal sandwich.

Toasted sourdough bread, with copious amounts of butter and Best Foods mayo, a thick slice of beefsteak tomato from the garden (hopefully one the same size as the bread), a light sprinkle of kosher salt and a liberal grind of Tellicherry black pepper. Heaven.

Tomato sandwiches are one of the great joys of summer.

I am new to Indian sandwiches. I’ve liked the ones I’ve tried.

Banh Mi with tofu skin
Grilled swiss and sauerkraut with mustard on either rye or sourdough
Salted summer tomatoes on a hard roll, LOL American Cheese, mustard and a few kettle chips tucked in - maybe lettuce for additional crunch (throwback to childhood)
Everything bagel (scooped to accommodate the veg and cc) with olive cream cheese, peppers, red onion, sprouts and cucumber - lots of good textures
Caramelized onion and mushroom grilled cheese on rye or sourdough
Egg sandwich on a homemade English Muffin with seasoned mashed avocado, tomato and cheese.
Tortas with refried beans, avocado, tomato, lettuce and Oaxaca cheese - squirt of homemade green salsa

I still think about a sandwich I ate about 10 years ago in Matera, Italy. Altamura bread, incredible fresh mozzarella and vegetables - roasted peppers and eggplant, and arugula - all topped with olive oil.

Clearly, vegetables, cheese and carbs combine to make my perfect comfort foods.

I got home late last night so had a quick supper.

I stopped by the grocery for some things I needed today, and found a small package of steaks (petite sirloin?) For a princely $4.41 so I grabbed it.

Tossed them in a pan with some sautéed mushrooms and onions that my roommate left behind, then put them on toasted sourdough from TJs.

Im not a big sandwich eater, but this one hit the spot.

The travel memories reminds me of a sandwich I had in Siena. The bread was a purplish black made with ash, and it had a mildly spicy pork with grilled peppers. It was delicious!
