What are you watching? - 2025

We watched 28 Years Later yesterday, despite our friend’s warning that he thought it sucked.

He was right. It was absolutely terrible. What a waste of our time. I could barely remember any of it when I woke up this morning, thinking we watched another episode of Taskmaster — which we shoulda done instead.

Not sure why, but I sat through Highest 2 Lowest, found it to be embarrassingly awful and should have turned it off right away. From the cheezy soundtrack to the wooden acting, I like Denzel and Spike Lee, but this was def on the Lowest end of the movies that they’ve made. YMMV.

Season 1 was my favorite . I really didn’t care for 3 much. We will see how the next one it

Watched the first 3 episodes of Wednesday. Still entertaining, though maybe not as fresh as the first season (the dialog in particular). Nice to see Buscemi, and Tim Burton’s style is just fun to watch.

We are watching The Waterfront on Netflix. Weird to see Topher Grace, the actor who played Eric in That 70s Show, in the role of the villain.

I guess sometimes a cliff hanger is how it all ends.

LOL

Netflix famously makes their decisions based on some internal algorith that relates some magic combination of driving new subscriptions and how well a show retains viewers, vs how much the show cost. A show that is perceived to be successful may be not successful enough, or the right KIND of ‘successfull’, to justify its renewal.

Alas, it is essentially training viewers not to bother getting into new things until they know that they won’t be left hanging.

Netflix seems to be pretty flakey as a business.

I won’t get into the anecdote, to protect privacy of a friend who worked there for a while.

I also know people who work, or have worked, for them. They have a policy of hiring people they think will be good at outrageous “can’t say no” rates, and if they aren’t immediate superstars, can them in 6 mo after having uprooted them and moved them out to LA or Vancouver or Sydney.

That’s pretty close to what happened to my friend.

There’s a big time food discussion on Lincoln Lawyer – Cole’s v. Phillipe’s french dip – maybe a touch more interesting now that one contestant closed up shop.

We couldn’t find a clip; so, a stand-in will have to do for now :

We’ve enjoyed Richard Osman’s books. We sensed that the Thursday Murder Club cast were itching to work together – a great pleasure for us because so many are “our people” from so many other well-produced shows.

It was great seeing them all working together again. After watching that I went back and watched the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with many of the same actors. Really enjoyed it.

I enjoyed the first episode of Lynley that’s now available in Canada on BritBox.

I didn’t watch the earlier series based on the same books.

Same, unfortunately. It made Brooklyn look beautiful which made me happy, but so, so preachy and heavy handed and the studio scene really was just too much. Not his best by a mile.

Omg, the studio scene was so cringe

Following several personal recommendations, as well as being curious about the hype, we tried watching The Hunting Wives last night.

We found it so cringe and badly written we gave up on it after the second episode.

Our lame-o streak continued last night with the surprisingly well-rated Dangerous Animals.

It was dumb.

Why is there so much shyte on these streaming services?!?! :man_facepalming:

Eh. Plenty of good shyte, too. Streaming services are like life: ya gotta wade thru a lot of shit to find a few gems

I’ve been wading through a shyte ton of shyte just for a few good ones.
