Did you know that The Penguin was a limited series? I just learned this from reading about the Emmy nominations. I was unaware and assumed it would continue.
I’ve watched 3 episodes, I like it.
The reposts of bits simply prove the thesis: This is one of the funniest movies ever, where the jokes are funny even when you know them.
The pleasure is watching them executed in the most perfect possible way. Guest’s pause, after Reiner says “Well why not just make that 10 and make that louder?” Beat. Beat. “… These go to eleven. “
That exchange is a combination of master comic timing on Guest’s part and perfect instincts on the part of the editor. A half second to either side wouldn’t be as funny.
Yeah. But from what I’ve heard it sounded like it might be folded into some other show in that universe.
Oh, interesting. I’d like it to be a stand-alone show, if anyone asks.
I remember watching Spinal Tap in college on VHS with a group, including a few head bangers. It was a crazy time musically with lots of diversity. In any case, one of the metal heads took things a little too seriously…and of course he was mocked for it, including the viewing. Even he ended up cracking up and laughing at stuff because it was both real and absurd. He chilled out after that, didn’t take metal as seriously. I mean how could he?
She’s been around the Michael Connelly universe for awhile and in the latest book Bosch helps out in her unsolved crime unit (that seems to be a popular theme for police shows-love Unforgotten). I’m hoping he shows up in subsequent seasons or maybe slides over into the Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix. Just watched the last episode of Bosch Legacy and they introduce her character. I’ll miss Mo, the tech guy and loved seeing Crate and Barrel one last time.
As part of an ongoing franchise of a Major Intellectual Property™ owned by a Major Corporation™ currently headed by a Major Asshole™, your comment has been noted and will be summarily disregarded.
The funny thing about the whole situation: The Penguin is itself a spinoff from Matt Reeves 'The Batman, which itself was considered successful because it was NOT part of the (then) ongoing interconnected DCEU. And it’s anticipated to remain that way even through the (apparently) successful reboot of it all w/ Gunn’s Superman.
Maybe that’s the secret. Title simplification. Next movie has been announced: Supergirl.
Maybe just Super. About a guy who fixes stuff in an apartment building and has special powers, like being able to unclog sinks with his mind.
You kid, but:
It’s quite good, but has a VERY dark, like pitch-black sense of humor. Not to everyone’s taste.
That sounds very different from my idea! Interesting cast.
Fists of Fury (1972) - dir. Lo Wei
I’m woefully under exposed to the seminal Hong Kong martial arts films that laid the foundations for so much action and thriller cinema. I’ve been slowly working backwards, catching up with John Woo’s early stuff and seeing where Jackie Chan turned action into a contact sport.
Now it’s time for Bruce Lee. The O-est of the G’s. His legacy looms so large, it’s hard to remember that, after his role as Kato on The Green Hornet 60’s tv series, he only really has four feature films as a leading man, all released over the course of 3 years, from The Big Boss in '71 to his last, Enter the Dragon released just six weeks after his death in '73. Fists of Fury is his second.
The story is set during Imperial Japan’s peak post WWI, and involves a Japanese school of Kung Fu disrespecting Lee’s Chinese school during the funeral of Lee’s master. There’s a fair amount of social commentary concerning the Japanese occupation and racism but it’s the fighting, though rather tame by today’s standards, that really stands out. Watching him move really is magnetic. There’s also a fair amount of solid, if very broad acting from Lee, but that fits with style of the film. He’s also unexpectedly funny.
I’m not likely to give much of the posthumous output a look. A lot of unscrupulous folks mined footage of him from his films ad at least one unfinished project and cut them into their own, leading to a bunch of in-name-only Bruce Lee films. There is, however, a rich vein of imitators, Bruce Li, Bruce Lie, etc. that fueled a whole industry for a number of years.
3.5/5 kicks that would put my back out for weeks if I even thought of attempting them
This movie is the reason I added an 11 to the volume knob on my stereo. “It’s one more.”
They have a cameo in episode 4 of Ballard.
Going to start Ballard this weekend. Is Bosch’s tech guy Mo in the new series? He really grew on me this last season.
Need your favourite recommendations for Apple TV please. Just upgraded my iPhone so I think I’ll get a 3 month “ free “ trial. TIA
