What are you watching? - 2025

I watched the first two episodes of On Call, on Amazon Prime, and am enjoying it. It is a lot grittier, and more realistic, than most of the current cop shows. Some of it is filmed using police body cams.

The only Will Ferrell movie I’ve seen is Elf. Not my favourite actor. I don’t even know why I don’t really like his stuff.

One of our TV channels (BBC4) often runs foreign crime series (with English subtitles). Usually enjoyable, especially the “Scandi Noir” ones. I’m looking forward to a new one, starting tonight. Crá is the first one that I recall produced in Irish

I got to go see one of my favorite comics, Marc Maron (famously of the WTF podcast) last night at the Crest theater. It was a great show. He had about 20 minutes on the LA fires and him attempting to evacuate with his cats.

If he’s coming anywhere near you, I give him most enthusiastic endorsement. I was crying with laughter and several points. The guy is GOOD.

I love him, his podcast, and his standup. Lucky you!

Janet Planet, playwright Annie Baker’s (of whom I’d never heard) first film. It stars Julianne Nicholson - medium H is a fan, which is why we watched - and traces the low-key events of the summer of 1991, before her daughter starts sixth grade. This is one of those quiet, languid independent films in which a few mildly important things happen, but nothing much changes. It was pleasant enough, the performances are good, and it’s shot well, but there’s ultimately not enough there there.

Loved the new Wallace & Gromit, Vengeance Most Fowl. I recommend watching the episode The Wrong Trousers first, as they are connected

With Diane Morgan of Cunk fame. Brill.

We watched this last night - a good palate cleanser after the second Chicken Run, which was not good at all.

Same. Hey, roll the dice. Maybe you’ll like it more than I did.

Watched this over Xmas. Really good.

Towards the end, there’s a canal scene. At one point, the action is of the boat navigating along a very high aquaduct. I’m sure this was based on the Pontcysyllte aguaduct - over which I have actually steered a canal narrowboat. Scary - it is very, very high - and narrow.

I saw the first two episodes of The Pitt, on Max, created by the ER team, and starring ER vet Noah Wylie. Each hour episode is presented real time (so 15 episodes represent 15 consecutive hours in the ER). I am enjoying it so far. It’s nice to have a medical show actually concentrate on doctors and patients without the soap opera fillers.

And a bit of Googling suggests I was right.

The awl bidnez is a tough one at the Landman level. That said, Jerry Jones’s surprise and convincing appearance last week made that episode for us. We’ll guess last night’s all-over-the-place finale set up another season, instead of serving as a wrap-up of the experiment . . .

I watched, and loved, the original version w/ Robert Hardy and Christopher Timothy.

I may have to look up a way to watch this new version. I had no idea it was happening!

Season 5 already!

Just finished Black Doves (Netflix) and Disclaimer (Apple+). Both were very good, although we had some issues with parts of the plot line in Disclaimer, especially near the very end. Black Doves has a second season coming late in 2025.

My wife’s late uncle was friends with Timothy. I believe they had trained together at acting school. Arthur never had more than minor roles during his career and was often not working. His wife, Mary (who is still alive) was head of the make-up department of the then regional television station, Yorkshire TV.

Somewhat inspired by just having watched Say Nothing, we dove into the PBS documentary One Upon a Time in Northern Ireland, which features interviews with ordinary people sharing their personal experiences, along with original footage.

Depressing, as you might imagine. What human beings will do to one another over religion or politics…
