Watching Goliath on Prime.
Yes, that was a nice series! Enjoyed season 1 tremendously.
I am now enjoying another older series, Banshee (HBO, 2014 I think). Four seasons, into season 3 now. Once you get over the initial premisse, criminal turns sheriff in a small town, the whole story offers numerous twists and turns. It’s an old school action series with plenty of intrige, some romance, lots of nudity, killings and fights, and - refreshingly - not a lot of humour. I say refreshingly as the writers did not create a series by the numbers (so not guided by what marketers think people will watch).
Didn’t like Billy Bob till S1 of Fargo and this show.
First season is the best imo, but the subsequent seasons attract a great cast.
His eyes remind me of a family friends’ eyes, a friend who is about 18 years younger than Billy Bob. Billy Bob has grown on me.
I only remember seeing him in Monster’s Ball and that black and white movie set in Santa Rosa, previous to watching Landman and now Goliath over the past 2 weeks.
He sure says “Honey” as a term of endearment a lot in both Landman and Goliath.
Watched the first 3 episodes of Say Nothing, an FX show based on journalist Patrick Radden Keefe’s book about The Troubles. So far, so brilliant… if by brilliant you mean depressing. To think a country could be so divided that citizens dehumanize one another to the point of endless violence and murder.
Thank goodness that’s all in the past. /s
Two more episodes of The Big Door Prize after to un-depress.
@Lectroid I finally watched The Substance with my lady posse (well, 9 of them), and we positively LOVED it… well, my fellow singer friend was looking a bit pale towards the ending — she’s not ‘trained’ in body horror / slasher movies as well as we are
I probably can’t put it any better than you did in your 2024 review, so I’ll leave it at that. I’m not a huge fan of Demi Moore, generally, but she really did a fantastic job.
And the ending was perfection.
SHRINKING on Apple TV+ — season 2 is put, but I forgot a lot of season 1, so…
Love Harrison Ford in a sardonic avatar, Jason Segel does a nice job as the main character, and the actress who plays his daughter is wonderful. The rest of the supporting cast is also very good.
Storyine is poignant and funny — the messy real lives of therapists.
PS: That mustard-colored coat, tho!
I’m so glad you liked it. I’m hopeful it will be recognized when (or, given the LA fires, IF) the awards start coming out.
Incidentally, here’s a link to the full review from last year:
I linked that very review in my comment
So I went and watched Nowhere Land, and I can see why you thought this would be up my alley.
This is an example of a very modern sort of horror that has a lot of its roots in internet culture, creepypasta (weird stories and other media whose origins are spread are primary online) and are generally more about ‘vibe’ and ‘mood’ rather than the explicit plot focus and character arcs of more traditional narratives. This sort of thing can range from 2022’s experimental and impenetrable Skinamarink , to last years mood trans allegory I Saw the TV Glow, through the more conventional but inventive series Channel Zero. There’s lots of dream logic, non-linear editing, often a blurring of what is “really” happening vs filmic devices just to create atmosphere.
A lot of folks have little patience for this sort of thing. They are designed with a particular audience in mind, who will bring context to it that those outside the intended target are likely to miss, or least, appreciate much less.
As it happens. I think Nowhere Land was a noble, but failed effort. It’s clearly a very low budget production, the performances are, let’s say ‘perfunctory’, and its confusing and meandering plot isn’t supported by enough artistic accomplishment to make puzzling through it worth while.
It’s certainly the kind of film I might like, it just isn’t a very good example.
Oh well.
Started in on the 4th season of Sex Education all by my lonesome bc my PIC wasn’t interested in the show (his loss). The familiar faces are now attending an alternative arts college, where 90% of the students seem to be queer or nonbinary, but I suppose it’s not meant to be realistic — as evidenced by the many fabricated conflicts between the main characters
It’s def not the strongest season, but continues to hit the right notes when it comes to the strained relationship between Kevin and his father, which has always been the most heartbreaking storyline to me. Both just want to connect and be loved, but they struggle with the ‘how.’
Well thant wasn’t good for my abdominal hernia!
Another gut buster😆
One of the most quotable movies. Right up there with Anchorman.
Livin’ the dream!
Add Talladega Nights to the list
And Old School
I watched Juror #2 (Netflix), and I’m confused about the ending. Towards the end, when the protagonist saw the suspect turn do a quick u-turn, did that convince him that the suspect was in fact guilty? What did the prosecutor realize when she was looking at her phone during the sentencing–wasn’t that just the protagonist’s wife?
I really love Anchorman and Talledega Nights. After that, I can mostly give Farrell movies a miss. The notable exception to that is Stranger Than Fiction, a neat little magic-realism film about a guy who discovers that he is living out the life being written by an author (Emma Thompson).
My partner has a number of actors she just DOES NOT LIKE. At the top of that list is Nick Cage. Around 3rd or 4th is Will Farrell, the only exception being Elf. But she loves Bad Santa way more.
Watched the first episode of the Agency-a remake of the French show Le Bureau. Not bad although I was busy figuring out which character matched up with their French characters from the original show.
