Mountainhead is worth watching for the performances, and that’s about it. It’s been compared to Succession, which also features characters I probably don’t care about. The plot is flimsy, getting silly at the end.
Another set in Wales:
Starting Dept Q (first season on Netflix, but more on Britbox I think). Looks like it’s going to be really good, but some of the accents are challenging to these American ears.
Turn on subtitles
I did…… but thanks.
Yes, I’ve heard the same thing, but I don’t think that is quite accurate. Maybe Ted Lasso in reverse, with the prodigy more talented than the has-been coach. But it does have a similar ‘feel good’ sensation about it. Owen Wilson fans should enjoy it. The supporting cast is very good, including the prodigy’s mother.
Thank you!
Did they not help?
We occasionally turn on subtitles for Irish productions (or even US mumblecore), and it makes a huge difference.
I believe the comparison was more about the general tone of the show, less so about the plot.
Watched E1 of Safe House last night, which is apparently 10 years old (!). We liked it enough to continue watching, although it’s pretty easy to see where it is going.
To my knowledge there’s only one series of Department Q so far. I appreciate all the location shooting although of course, we’re all a bit fussed here about these references to “Leith Park” which we’re guessing they mean Leith Links. (There is no such place as Leith Park.)
It’s being compared to Succession because Jesse Armstrong is a writer-- and yeah, dealing with billionaires.
The plot is flimsy but I think it’s because of all of it was more occasion to imagine the horrific conversations of these tech bros and their conviction that technocapitalism can solve everything. It was also so male, although necessarily so.
I wasn’t clear. Sorry! . I had turned them on while watching and before I posted. Hadn’t thought to mention it. Didn’t mean to sound snarky, if that’s how it seemed.
Absolutely no worries. I didn’t think you were being snarky at all
Finished binging Dept. Q. On Netflix. REALY, REALLY GOOD!!!
Hoping there’s a second season.
The Mark Twain Prize 2025: Conan O’Brien with many other comedians.
Entertaining.
Finished Leverage: Redemption season 2 last night, as well as the two most recent episodes of Duster. Leverage has been a favorite in our house for ages and its newest iteration does it justice. Duster has been fun to watch as well. I forgot how much I enjoyed Josh Holloway! Corbin Bernsen as his dad is a hoot, too.
I guess I’ll be watching this. Collected the comics as a kid. Anyone watch it?
Oh boy. I’m so happy this has happened. I get to save someone.
This series is awful. It attempts to ‘modernize’ the concept by having these late 60’s / early 70’s stoners pulled out of their time and plunked down in modern day. It’s toothless, lazy ‘stoner’ jokes with very little of the social commentary or anarchic fun of the originals
Don’t bother. Dig out your old issues or find reprints. You can’t separate your seeds and stems on a streaming video.
Thanks for the warning, I still have to watch one episode out of curiosity. First thing that comes to mind, who does the voice work…curious, seems like a big factor.
