What are you watching? - 2025

Ludwig requires buying into the preposterous premise. That said and easy enough to do, it’s funny, and she’s a good sleuth – well, after all, she was on Bletchey Circle . . .

Checking that one out, but I’m recognizing her from Line Of Duty. I think.

Ah! That’s what she was in, too! Brits make such excellent cop shows — and I don’t care for cop shows, so that’s saying something! I most recently saw her in Until I Kill You, in which she was incredible.

You can watch them on hdclump.com also. They seem to have a lot of British shows available. I’ve been watching the latest season of Junior British bake-off this week on that site.

We watched the first two episodes of The Bondsman with Kevin Bacon. Nice killing of demons, but the dialog’s stilted. Not sure if we’ll stick to it.

Then a couple more episodes of A Man on the Inside, which is fluffy & soothing & perfect just before bedtime.

Liking Mob Land on Paramount, at least the first 2 episodes. Tom Hardy is a favorite, I wish the Taboo series had continued beyond the single season.

Taboo was excellent.

We Were There to be There (2021) - dir. Mike Plante and Jason Willis

In June of 1978, SF-based punk band The Mutants and NYC-based The Cramps played a show for residents of the Napa State Mental Hospital. How such a weird event happened, and how it was captured on ancient 1/2” reel-to-reel video is the subject of this 23 minute documentary that covers the history of Target Video, who recorded hours of rare west coast concert footage, how the show came to be staged, and, to quote the filmmaker at the Q&A I attended, “How Ronald Reagan continues to fuck us…”

It’s a fascinating look into the early punk scene on the west coast and touches on the conservative policies that wrecked a system that gave some of the most vulnerable of society a safe place to go. The facility is now the Napa State Forensic Hospital, reserved for those judged not competent to stand trial or serve a conventional sentence. The change in attitude is striking and saddening.

In addition, the documentay was accompanied by the FULLY RESTORED tapes of both band’s sets, complete with inmates coming up and joining both bands on stage. It’s an a remarkable record of an unusual event and a must for anyone interested in punk rock or musical history.

The documentary itself is free on YouTube. The concert footage (and more!) is available on the Blu-ray.

View it here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KwwRQVgW-0g

Get the Blu-ray, that has the fully restored footage of both bands plus even more rare archival footage here: https://grasshopperfilm.myshopify.com/products/the-cramps-and-the-mutants-the-napa-state-tapes-blu-ray

I’m excited that Season 2 of The Last of Us is going to start soon. I really enjoyed Season 1. I hope the new season is good.

I love this show. Also very psyched for Hacks.

I didn’t know there would even be a 2nd season, so I was psyched when I heard about it!

We are going to give it another try, as we stopped watching after the second episode. Perhaps we were just too dystopia’d out after having watched The Walking Dead for too long, and similar scenarios. Friends implored us to watch the third episode, which was “brilliant,” they said. We didn’t.

But we felt the same way about the Breaking Bad pilot — a feeling we couldn’t quite understand the second time around.

Perhaps/hopefully this will be similar

I was also disapppointed, but for some different reasons.

Really? This I thought was completely obvious, I just thought it would have had an earlier reveal. Also perhaps a more positive turn, vs the everyone-dead outcome.

Ugh I hope not. But I think her son will also factor in, and it probably won’t end well.

Much more of a let-down were the Ratcliffe clonclusion and the girls trip cop-out.

I’m excited about this:

I would also implore you to watch the third episode of TLOU Season 1 - for us, it was one of the best episodes of TV we have ever watched. My husband and I were in tears while watching it.

I must be the only one who didn’t see it coming. Maybe because it was impossibly stupid. I was super disappointed that Lochlan didn’t die.

Yup, that’s what we’ve been told!

I was expecting Parker Posey to throttle Jason Isaacs for making off with her pills. I also thought the Goggins story was one of the least compelling (read boring) story lines.

Nice to see the girls make up, if somewhat unrealistic after all the sniping and backstabbing.

Generally, I thought the performances were excellent, and many of the individual scenes were great. But the overall narrative was pretty weak.
