We went to see Peter Case at the Grand Emporium in KC. There’s a walk up pizza place, Antonio’s, next door. We’re standing in line for pizza before the show and Peter is right in front of us in the line, ordering a slice just like the rest of us serfs.
One of my best unintentional R & R memories.
And he put on a great show too!

Hey Damiano,

I loved and still love Spanadau Ballet.

I was a small kid when they had their fame in the early 80’s.

If you’re into the 80’s music pop scene in England and how a small bar/discoteque was the place where many of the famous artists from the 80’s found their early glory take a look at the Netflix documentary called ‘Blitzed’

One of the guys who apparently visited that bar was the guys behind the group Visage. Also Boy George and the guys behind Spandau Ballet.

Still today this early 80’s track from Visage is quite unique and a great electronic pop track in my view.

Hi Claus, same for me. I remember getting into trouble with my parents who wanted me to come eat dinner at the dinner table, while I was waiting for our version of top of the pops which would start at 6PM. I also remember when songs like ‘China girl’ and ‘Shout’ came out! Plus sitting in front of the tv the whole day watching this magnificent concert:

Bryan Ferry with David Gilmour

And when I became a big U2 fan:

Shout was the first ever record (yeah I’m old) I bought with my own money. It was the maxi version. And even though I grew up with maxis, I never quite understood their point.

This gem popped up in my Fb memories today.

I think I posted songs from her debut album here before. Such talent! Ima check out her 2023 album now.

Maxis are convenient for a dj, as you can use the instrumental parts to mix into or out of another song. I love maxis myself, as I love ‘beats’ as in dance music. But two great maxis from the 80s are imho:

(Because the normal single doesn’t have the ‘rap’)

(And because Sly and Robbie were the 80s masters of beats)

Ah, gotcha! I love that song & only ever heard the extended version that included the rap. Maybe the Euro release?

I always hated it when a DJ would start to play a song I love, I’d race to the dance floor… only for them to change it almost immediately to another one with a similar beat, but one I don’t care for. That’s probably why I never got much into the whole clubbing scene

I dabbled around with dj-ing a bit… Clubbing in the 80s and 90s was so much more fun versus nowadays (now I sound old!). Although I feel sad being too young to have missed out on early 80s clubbing in New York and Chicago, where disco melted with rock, jazz and pop. Hence this 12 inch being a dance floor classic!

As for clubbing: I more than made up for that in the 90s… With now Masters at Work being the decade’s masters of beats… The original is superb as well.

I tried boygenius but not my preference so far. This is what I meant by the what might have been comment. I am biased to pop and alternative and love Kyoto. Will keep checking boygenius as I respect the talent.
