I think I mentioned that my daughters got me back into listening to country music. This is one of them that I might have kind of skipped over, except the artist (Jelly Roll) gave a local interview and discussed why the song meant a lot to him.
Itâs called âI am NOT okay, but weâll be all rightâ (eventually, I guess). He thinks itâll help folks who are struggling with whatever.
Thatâs a sad one (which GJ was known for!).
But for me, quintessential George is always âHe Stopped Loving Her Todayâ.
On a lighter note, my three daughters have learned to sing the lyrics with me of David Allen Coeâs âYou Never Even Called Me By My Nameâ, which ~ 40 years ago we used to get up on the tables at Army post dive bars and scream out at the top of our lungs.
Thanks! That might be one I saw live in IL. Or maybe in Indiana. I went to several.
You donât have to call me Waylon Jennings And you donât have to call me Charlie Pride And you donât have to call me Merle Haggard anymore Even though youâre on my fightingâ side
Leaving it you to post your picks from those three greats.
Well, my daughters asked me what those all meant and I couldnât actually answer them. My best guess was (and please note that they are all adult children during this convo) that Davidâs lover was hoping for one of them (other guys) to be having sex with her, and thatâs why she never called him by his name and instead called out âWaylonâ, etc.
Iâm still not positive thatâs the reasoning in the song, but thatâs my working theory.
Re picking from the three - Iâm a lover, so Charlie Pride no question. But the funny thing is he was kinda banned from our house (where I was a foster kid) because my fosters had a short breakup just before they married, where the (interloper dude) serenaded my foster mom with Charlie Pride songs!
LoL, dumb shit you remember 50 years later.
RIP J. D. Souther
Always found it odd how popular this song is.
Maybe⌠he didnât like her enough to put a ring on it?
Perhaps one of my most despised songs in existence, but today it simply feels perfect
Whereas this is an all-time favorite.
And this. Of course, Nina Simone is the epitome of cool.
