What are you baking? January 2026

You didn’t even taste part of one cookie?

No yet. I know one bite would lead too another

I love both that and the original recipe. I now often add the freeze dried raspberries to the standard recipe because it was such a favourite of so many people..

I looked in several grocery stores for freezer dry raspberries. Where do you get yours?

Obviously not @rstuart but I get all my freeze-dried berries at Trader Joe’s

Is there an independent grocery store near you? The independent grocery store I shop at in London, and Fiesta Farms in Toronto , usually keep the freeze dried raspberries and strawberries in sealed pouches on a stand in the produce aisle.

I think you mentioned your son had bought cod at Whole Foods over the holidays. While Foods should have them. They might be in the snack aisle or near the cash registers rather than the produce aisle.

Some Ontario Costcos sell them

Someone asked the same question on Reddit and Longo’s (a grocery store chain in the Greater Toronto Area for non Greater Torontonians) was selling them 9 months ago.

I don’t have a TJ or WF around me, so I get mine at a natural foods store.

Thanks, I did look at Whole Foods but probably in the wrong place. I do have a Longos near me but for some reason nevershop there.

Definitely no TJ in Ontario here. I use to like them when we travelled.

The Longo’s near my old building (York Mills and Leslie) had really great produce, better than Loblaws, Metro, or Whole Foods, and cheaper. The parking lot was a nightmare, so I only went there when I was shopping before hosting dinner parties and my Xmas party. I moved south of St Clair 10 years ago, and haven’t been to a Longo’s since then. I would, if I had one nearby.

I was happily surprised to find that my local Target store carries many freeze dried fruits, including these raspberries.

Unfortunately, Target closed all its locations in Canada.

Target had taken over some of our Zellers locations, when they entered the Cdn Market.

Apart from Walmart and some dollar stores, Canada, or at least Ontario, doesn’t really have any good five and dimes anymore.

I really like the Targets in Buffalo.

Some Winners and Homesense , which are like our TJ Maxx, might occasionally have freeze dried fruit.

That link is bad, but this should work,

Thanks. I’ve fixed my note (I think).

I had some that I got for Christmas from some American relatives, but I have randomly seen them at Dollarama, and Farm Boy.

Interesting verbiage. To me a five and dime is Woolworth’s. Target and Walmart would be discount stores.

I consider Walmart and Target to be the grandchildren of Woolworth’s.

Are there any Five and Dimes in business where you live?

I think Woolworth’s may still be in business in South Africa.

Woolworth’s was going out of business and liquidating in Manhattan the month I moved to New York in 1997. Everything was picked over. I remember buying some a bathroom mat and some spices.

The Woolworth’s in Canada closed by around 1988.

I miss Woolworth’s, Woolco (in Canada, we had both Woolworths and Woolco), Kmart and Zellers (Canadian).

Woolco closed in 1996. Walmart arrived in Canada in the summer of 1996. I bought some dyed to match shoes when I was a bridesmaid for a friend’s August wedding at Walmart, pumps that killed my feet. That was my first purchase. I ‘ve only spent around $100 at Walmart over the past 29 1/2 years. Maybe 6 visits. Weirdly, when we had our lockdowns in 2020, Walmart was one of the few businesses allowed to stay open, and I ended up buying some business supplies at Walmart.

I find Target a little nicer than Walmart. it’s always a treat for me to visit.

I guess the main difference for me is that Woolworth’s, Woolco and Zellers ran pretty nice lunch counters or luncheonette inside their stores, whereas the Walmart has a McD’s in my city. The Canadian Targets that took over the Zellers locations did not run restaurants inside them.

Another difference was that Woolworth’s, Woolco, and Zellers sold pets, notions, and fabric in the 1980s. I remember looking at the canaries and budgies at Woolworth’s, Kmart, and Woolco. I don’t think I remember seeing any Walmarts that sold pets and I don’t think our Cdn Walmarts sell fabric.

Cardamom shortbread from Good Things. I was looking for a delicious and sturdy cookie I could mail, because I finally got around to sending a Christmas/birthday parcel. I never put eggs in shortbread, so I wouldn’t call it that, but they are very tasty. Crisp but not crumbly. I didn’t add pistachios, as the pistachio cardamom cookies I made a few months ago are the pinnacle of that cookie for me. Anyway, will find out tomorrow how they survived the post.

Thanks, i will keep an eye out for freezer dried fruits when I’m out shopping.

So pretty and perfectly round; how do you do that?

Remember I loved the recipe you posted but found them much too fragile. Then I made the Nosrat recipe adding ground pistachios and settled on that. Absolutely everyone loves them and they aren’t fragile. So fragrant!

She said keeping them in tins keeps them crispy.
