Weekly Menu Planning - March 2026

Avoiding foods that trigger gout is a good plan, but once it hits isn’t medicine called for?

Hear, hear. My PIC has been on allopurinol ever since his absolutely horrendous gout attack in BOTH feet at the same time in 2008.

He eats what he wants and has never looked back.

I can message you about that. I don’t want to derail menu planning about the treatment, beyond saying how my planning for our house has changed to avoid flare-ups.

Has your DC with gout been told by their doctor for example what types of foods they should or should not be eating? I had a diabetic friend a few years ago that was working with a nutritionist who advised her which foods to avoid and which ones were okay. It took a little guess work out of what she should or should not be eating…

I found the information online through the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Kidney org, Arthritis Society and an NHS site.
I already knew about avoiding cured meats, shellfish, and herring. This is the fourth time to be dealing with this over 6 years, and we had been managing to avoid flares by avoiding herring completely, keeping luncheon meats to a minimum, and limiting the amount of shrimp.

I can ask my own registered dietician about this when I talk to her about my own progress. I am pretty sure the bases are covered by the info posted on sites I mentioned.

With gout, it’s avoiding foods that have purines.

All good, no need to DM, best of luck to your friend.

Wish you good recovery – it does tend to drain more than one expects.

Re your Tuesday wrap ingredients: these shortcut gozleme take minimal effort – I fold the tortilla over in half like a quesadilla. (If you make extra Thai ground beef, it would also be great in a quesadilla, with or without an egg in the mix in a la egg paratha or jian bing.)

Happy birthday!
Hope you have a wonderful day and dinner, whatever you end up choosing!

(I hate those lingering coughs, which I seem to have had after every visit home over the last few years. Almost always takes something herbal / alternative for me to get rid of them when I get back, and the same thing doesn’t always work twice in a row. Good luck.)

Just popping in to say hello. My husband is still dealing with multiple medical tests/procedures, so our meal planning has pretty much come to a halt for the duration. Still reading your posts and getting inspired. Take care of yourselves!

Hi everyone

It seems harder and harder to find ways to stay positive these days, but food is usually a reliable distraction, so I’m all about comfort food at the moment. Baking myself some bread after a very long time. Trying to find peace and pleasure in small things.

Things that sound good to me right now:
— Chicken & rice / Yakhni Pulao (with my chicken stock)
Zucchini scarpaccia / flatbread from COTM Diana Henry with some soup (maybe lentil, I’ve been missing legumes)
Masala pot roast with freshly-baked crusty bread
— King oyster/ trumpet mushrooms — either copycat of a Malaysian restaurant dish with aromatics, soy sauce, and curry leaves, or yakitori-style with tare sauce
— Shortcut Gozleme / spinach & cheese quesadillas
— Homemade pizza (from extra bread dough)
— Pork jowl (that I found in the freezer) Thai-style (like this or this) + addictive garlic cabbage OR cabbage colcannon from COTM Diana Henry OR Skillet potato gratin from COTM Samin Nosrat

Take care and stay safe

Hi, still dealing with a sprained (but healing) right hand and no cooking mojo. Here’s what we are going to eat - feeding 3 in the Boston burbs.

Sun: mustardy cracker crumb cod, air fryer green beans

Mon: steak and asparagus ramen stir fry

Tues: burrito bowls with taco chicken

Weds: sheet pan panko chicken and broccoli (this but marinated in Italian dressing instead)

Thurs: turkey burgers, chips, carrot sticks

That all sounds delicious!

Well I have made it through the part where it’s all cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, chicken noodle soup and fish and soft non-fibrous veggies in dashi. Tomorrow I can start eating things I need to chew. Thinking of starting with Colombian Chicken and Potato Stew (with limited onion) for tomorrow and Thursday, then will figure out Snacky Friday on the day. Saturday I can go to the fishmonger and see what looks good for Saturday and Sunday. By Monday, if there have been no set-backs, I might progress to roasted chicken – woo hoo!
