Hi Everyone, I hope you’re enjoying your weekend. Another busy week here without a lot of cooking. Lulu got home for Spring Break on Friday, and we’re heading to Bermuda for a week on Wednesday. I have my colonoscopy tomorrow, LLD has a medical procedure on Tuesday. Whirlwind! Here’s what we ate:

Mon: (chicken) sausage, peppers, onions subs

Tues: the doctor’s appointment that was postponed due to snow happened. Took longer than expected, but with happy results. We got carry out.

Wed: drove to DC, both had dental visits, then out for a fun time.

Thurs: drove home, I fibered myself up like crazy, knowing I would miss it. Big salad with beans and guacamole.

Fri: Lulu home! She requested larb, so I made that for her and LLD, with rice, salad. I had a turkey and cheese sandwich. I was a little sad.

Sat: bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon; tomatoes, capers, onions for those who could .

Sun: they’ll be working it out themselves while I hide in my room and bathroom.

Hoping everyone has a good week. Hang in there.

The image of you gorging yourself on… fiber! is pretty darn funny. But good for you for adulting. I hope you have “bathroom roses” on hand for today! (A friend said she does this every prep season… something pretty to look at as a distraction.)

I know … I thought to myself “why am I so obsessed?” but knew I was going to miss fruits and vegetables. We had this perfect pear …
No bathroom roses. Just fortitude.

I hope the trend of happy medical/dental visits continues, on Monday for you (and of course with today’s prep) and for LLD on Tuesday. You, LLD, and Lady Berkeley must be thrilled to have Lulu home, and what great planning that you will all be flying off to Bermuda Wednesday!

For 3 in southwestern Ontario:

Sunday: take-out fried chicken thighs, take-out Vietnamese seafood noodle soup, mango and cabbage salad with shrimp and pork, and vegetable tofu stir fry.

Monday: St Paddy’s supper. Corned beef, parsnips, scalloped potatoes with Dubliner, mixed salad with a Green Goddess- type dressing. Baked beans.
. Purchased chocolate Stout cupcakes

Tuesday: maybe roast beef or braised beef

Wednesday: it’s San Giuseppe Day. I was thinking of trying one of the San Giuseppe Day Pastas I found online.

Most feature bread crumbs, which symbolize the sawdust associated with Joseph, the carpenter. San Giuseppe Day is also Father’s Day in Italy.

This one has sardines and bread crumbs.

These 2 call for anchovies and bread crumbs

I won’t be making Zeppole di San Giuseppe.

I was thinking about making a vanilla custard with cherries, inspired by the flavours in Zeppole di San Giuseppe.

That’s all I’ve got.

Happy St Paddy’s and Happy San Giuseppe Day to everyone celebrating.

Hello friends I have now finished a one week staycation. Time flies by when you’re having fun. I’ve had a somewhat productive vacation combining sightseeing and shopping although I would have preferred to do a little more of the former and a little less of the latter. On a positive note, I managed to pick up lycra shorts and a t-shirt since I would like to take up yoga this year and I checked out the spring fashions so now I just have to wait for the sales to start  My menus from last Friday through next Thursday are as follows:

Friday: Off to the west end for a combined food and clothing shop. I bought ghee and red lentils at the Indian supermarket since they are the two most pressing ingredients for some Indian dishes I hope to make in a week or two. I also stocked up on pantry staples at Costco (BTB vegetable bouillon base, pine nuts, dried fruits and the like). I also bought my lycra shorts and t-shirt here. I had a sandwich at a deli for lunch so I had a tossed salad for dinner.

Saturday: Off to do a two part grocery shop. I went up to a nearby grocery store to pick up beverages (bottled water, tonic water, etc.) then off to the west end again to stock up on canned goods and other pantry items to replenish my stash. This should last me for the next few weeks  I also had to make a detour to the Italian grocer to pick up the cheese I regularly have on hand and had a stroke when I found out the feta cheese I like, and paid $6 for a month ago or so is now $10! Yikes! I didn’t think the price would go up that high that fast. I had a pork and green bean stirfry for dinner.

Sunday: Last day off! Peanut butter noodles with cucumbers.

Today: Rice pilaf.

Tuesday: carmelized mushrooms and onions served over linguine. Some kind of salad on the side.

Wednesday: Leek and sundried tomato risotto.

Thursday: Fettuccine al pesto, salad tbd.

I also paid a visit to two art galleries while I was off - one of them had an exhibition of drawings that I really enjoyed and the other was a photography exhibition by a First Nations artist that told the history of his band from colonial times to the present. It was really interesting.

Is there a Marche Adonis in Ottawa accessible to you? I’m astounded by their feta bar (and plenty more) whenever I visit Montreal.

Both these sound wonderful!

Yes we have an Adonis in the east end of Ottawa. Its actually really easy to get there by bus (I don’t drive) since the bus that I take there stops a block away from my apartment and it drops me off across the street from Adonis. I’ve been there a few times and the store is lovely. I will most likely find somewhere downtown that has less expensive feta since I eat a lot of it so I can pick some up while I’m out and about on the weekend but I will certainly get some from Adonis the next time I’m there.

Costco used to carry Krinos feta in brine, but the container might be more than you keep on hand. The container Costco used to sell would not fit in my fridge.

If you have a Greek or Turkish store or deli nearby, selling feta out of tubs, or if you visit Adonis, you many find find Bulgarian feta and Macedonian feta.

Both are nice creamy fetas that are cheaper than Greek feta, and creamier than Canadian feta and some Greek feta .

Krinos is the brand I like the best but I’m not married to the brand. I bought some at Costco a couple of years ago and I was able to fit it in my fridge but I was not able to eat it fast enough even though I eat it often.

There’s a cheese shop in the Byward Market that sells an assortment of fetas in bulk so I shall try there the next time I need feta which will probably be this weekend  I know he sells Bulgarian feta but I’ve never tried it. If it’s creamy then I should give it a try.

A post was merged into an existing topic: What’s For Dinner #116 - the Mardi Gras / St. Patrick’s Day Edition - March 2025

Make sure you have brine covering it. It should last without getting stinky if you keep it covered. I’ll post the recipe. I’ve noticed a lot of delis don’t include enough brine to cover it. Once you take a chunk out of the container, you need to add brine with the right salinity, or yeast will start growing and give it that off taste.

Greetings, People.

Floors are insulated, windows measured and ordered, and Kitchen Refresh week approaches. I’m planning on doing some bulk-batch cooking and baking this weekend, including a pot of chili, a mac and cheese, and a blueberry crumb cake. Between that, some hot dogs and wraps from the freezer, sandwich & salad stuff, and oatmeal & yogurt for breakfasts, we probably have more food than we’ll need for several days with no serious cooking other than reheating. Cupboard doors come off and other disassembly work begins as soon as I finish bulk-batching things.

FRI: Leftover pan pizza. Salad.

SAT: Cooking Light’s spicey-honey chicken thighs. Cucumber salad. Rice.

SUN – TUE: see intro.

WED: Steak and Ceasar in my newly reorganized and decluttered kitchen?

THUR: Burgers on the grill.

Coming back to recommend this Serious Eats recipe. I know we all eat a lot of meatballs, but these were tasty! Of course, I made some changes… I used homemade gluten-free bread (first time making a panade with gf bread), used dried dill instead of fresh and skipped the mint. I also didn’t have the mental wherewithal to brown the meatballs in a skillet and finish them in the oven, so I just baked for 20min at 400. Side note - not sure if it was the different meat, different bread, or just the recipe, but the mixture was very loose and I had to refrigerate it for a little while before I could form the meatballs. Overall, we all really liked them and the yogurt-feta sauce was excellent.
