We have new Cookbooks of the Month(s) – come join in!
Thanks so much for organizing this! I still have too much going on to be able to commit to participating, so I don’t vote. I do love both of these cookbook author so I hope to join this time.
Yay! Look forward to seeing you on COTM!
Continuing to cook for 3 in southwestern ON, for a softer food diet and a higher fibre low salt diet.
Monday, Feb 2nd: Mac and Cheese. I have some Gruyere so we will do a fancy Gruyere, Cheddar and Nutmeg version inspired by Martha’s Perfect tonight.
The pork roast I roasted Friday will be frozen this afternoon, and made into a Sunday sauce/gravy at a later date.
lemon oregano chicken thighs for those who want more lean protein.
ginger ale roasted parsnips
Tue, Feb 3: beef rouladen and potatoes
Wed, Feb 4: shellfish risotto
Thu, Feb 5: roast leg of lamb, maybe Kuku Sabzi, roast potatoes
Fri, Feb 6: maple ginger salmon, rice
Hope everyone has a good week.
A change of plans.
Chupe de Mariscos, third time to make this Michelle Bernstein recipe
Greetings, People, and Go Hawks!
I am so-totally-not a driven pro-sports fan, but I love seeing good things happen to my home-town (yes, Seattle was a “town” before it became a “city”). I went to the Seahawks homecoming parade after the 2014 SB win. It was The Happiest Place I Have Ever Been. All differences were set aside and everyone was just happy, happy, HAPPY. Go Hawks! (Did I already say that?)
Cleaning out the freezer and feeding two adults in the PNW.
FRI: Lentil soup from the freezer. Yogurt naan. Green salad.
SAT: Potstickers from the freezer. BBQ pork. Rice. Cuke salad.
SUN: Superbowl Sunday. All The Things: BBQ pork, wings, pizza. If we’re still snacky, then popcorn in the Whirly-Pop. Lots of cold and bubbly seltzer drinks to chase it all down and either celebrate a win or drown our sorrows.
MON: Roast chicken. Marinated bean salad. Focaccia.
TUE: Monday’s leftovers.
WED: There’s a whole quiche in the freezer. Let’s eat it (with salad).
THUR: Fondue! Dippers to include meatballs of some variety, apples, pickled onions, plus probably one more (TBD).
I don’t watch sports, but I always crave Wings and Nachos this time of year
Still cooking for 2 w̶i̶l̶d̶ ̶&̶ ̶c̶r̶a̶z̶y̶ mildly interesting adults in Happy Valley.
I mostly stuck to the plans laid out last week, bc it’s easier for my PIC to stick to a plan, and I still don’t have the energy to derail it with some spontaneous nonsense ![]()
A roti chicken we purchased Sunday provided multiple meals so far, i.e. meat for lunch sammiches & dinner tacos, luscious stock from the carcass turned into multiple soup dinners, etc. Not too shabby for a $5 boyd IYAM ![]()
As for tonight, a block of warmed silken tofu topped with a spicy sauce, multitudes of scallions & TPSTO Sinatra will be our main, smacked cukes with MOAR cilantro on the side. If any of the ancient rice in the fridge is still safe to eat, some of that as well.
Tomorrow the happy couple who recently returned from their Hong Kong sojourn is hosting our weekly poker game. The host makes some Killer Kantonese food, so I’m hopeful that we’ll be enjoying the fruits of his skillz. Who knows, maybe I’ll even win a hand for a change ![]()
Saturday is my first gig since my surgery — well, apart from the one that was booked just 4 days after & that I had to cancel. Will be interesting to see how the usual dress-up / war paint will work out with just one arm and the support of my very motivated but a-bit-out-of-his-element PIC
. A favorite food truck is set up at the brewery that night slinging the best smashburgers in town, i.e. dinner.
Sunday is some super-speshul sportsing event everyone but me seems to care aboot, that I hope we (or at least I) can avoid — save for the halftime show, of course. That seems almost required watching these days. And I can’t believe I just typed that sentence. Should we be spared from nachos and wings I’d prefer a brutally spicy dish, mabez a mapo doufu or curry or some such.
Monday TBD.
Tuesday I could be swayed to make carnitas tacos.
Wednesday I am possibly, finally, actually hosting my bishes with now TWO birfday gals to celebrate, having bowed out again from hosting this week. Detroit-style pizza is still on the agenda.
Thursday might be time for another chile heads gathering at one of the Sichuan places in town.
I have Valentine’s Day gigs with my trio on both Friday & Saturday night. Friday show is at a new venue, an “upscale” cocktail lounge beneath a very mediocre pizza place, so WFD is anyone’s guess. Saturday’s venue will let us pick from the tapas part of their Valentine’s special menu plus a main. My PIC was originally going to come along, but he ain’t forking over $100 for a VD meal while I’m on stage, so… my keyboarder to the rescue for the ride & helping the one-armed lady set up ![]()
Currently torn between the firecracker salmon fried rice, and the shrimp and chorizo grits. Lotsa time to ponder, of course.
Stay safe, stay warm, stay sane, fellow HOs, and eat all the things you love with the people you love ![]()
Three “remote learning” snow days and a 2-hr delay have created a week that feels unending. Tomorrow I’m predicting early release as there’s rain-to-snow predicted in the afternoon. Ah, Asheville ![]()
. I’m dying here.
For two adults and a kiddo with a rapidly expanding palate (thank goodness):
If anything interests just shout for the recipe.
I remember those days, and I feel for you!
Hi, all! Cooking for 2 in sunny Chattanooga.
Friday, February 6 (today): Fried rice with ham steak for DH and all the veggies I can cram in for me ![]()
Saturday breakfast: Yeasted pancakes with persimmon compote
Saturday: Chicken on a bed of cabbage, a French recipe with many similarities to the Smitten Kitchen/Helen Rosner favorite, but this one has bacon!!. Also baked fruit from Diana Henry’s Simple.
Sunday: Super Bowl party to make up for the bourbon tasting that got snowed/iced out last weekend. We’ll be there strictly for food and friends…
Tuesday: Chickpea and beet filo tart
Wednesday: Butternut squash “steak” and eggs
Thursday: Off to CA to visit various family members. I thought I’d also be escaping TN weather for sunnier climes, but so far it looks like I’ll be traveling in exactly the wrong direction to be warm…
Take care of yourselves, and happy cooking!
Hi everyone
Back home in NYC, getting used to the cold and missing the fam. A friend just announced that we are expecting our coldest temps yet this weekend — woot! So much for thinking I missed the worst of it. Off to the store this evening before it’s even more frigid out!
There will be several meals out to catch up with friends, and simple comfort food and cuisines I have missed at home. Might have to factor in a Super Bowl hangout with friends even if the weather makes me want to hibernate under a pile of blankets.
Ideas for the week (still need to look at COTM choices for new inspiration):
— Curry noodle soup with chicken, potatoes, and vegetables.
— Cantonese white-cut / poached chicken with ginger scallion sauce (to eat on its own and then repurpose in things like quesadillas, chicken salad, etc.). Maybe also a batch of soy sauce chicken once I check how much soy sauce I have at hand.
— Sichuan lamb dry-pot with assorted veg.
— Lamb rendang.
— Keller’s deep Quiche (eggs miraculously survived my absence) — with mushrooms most likely.
— Korean beef stew or Bulgogi.
Ideas for the tentative Super Bowl potluck with friends:
— Bite-sized quiche
— Pay bhaji fondue
— Puff pastry roll-ups with potato or kheema
— Something sweet — maybe tiger cake or hot milk cake as tres leches
Wish you all a restful weekend, and a peaceful and delicious week ahead.
Hi all, half-a$$edly planning for three in Boston.
Sun: chili from the NYT, served with Fritos. Good, salty, and hit the spot. Hot fudge sundaes too. (Tweaks to chili recipe: drained fat after browning the meat, gluten-free soy sauce and beer, and red beans instead of kidney. I also did on the stove rather than using the slow cooker function on my IP.)
Mon: chicken lo mein using a veggie mix from the grocery story and rice noodles
Tues through Fri are quasi-planned… I know what, but not when:
- chicken enchiladas suizas (made Saturday, we ate half)
- Pulled pork nachos
- Spaghetti and meatballs
- Leftover chili, maybe
The beet tart sounds delicious!
Hope you enjoy your trip, weather notwithstanding.
I loved the beet tart; DH wasn’t a fan (“It’s…interesting”). But it was pretty quick and easy to put together, so no big loss…
@dustchick - everything OK? We miss you!
Hello to everyone from the surprisingly mild and sunny Twin Cities of MN where I am trying to figure out and sign up for summer camps and things because the “good” ones are already accounted for. Cause the winter olympics are on. I’m ready for September back to school so Ii can relax. . .Big Kiddo has a new theater production she’s in and skating is in full force (as is adding sparkle to her new dress) so trying to plan as much as possible. Also trying to up the fiber/veggies while keeping carbs lower for me- I’ve lost 18% of my body weight from my heaviest and nothing motivates like success
Actuals and plans for 2 adults and 2 busy girls:
Weds 4: Both girls skate. Little one had a great practice- a revenge skate for a rough competition the previous weekend (she had a great program and she stepped out early of her back spin - she showed that spin who was the boss) A riff on zuppa toscana
Thurs 5: Costco finally had the gyro meat back in stock! Gyros to celebrate (I bought an extra fro the freezer)
Fri 6: Big kiddo theater. Thankfully it’s now light enough she can walk home when it’s done at 5. Spinach salad with HB eggs, bacon, garlic bread (purchased and underwhelming)
Sat 7: Last of the cuban pot roast, salad
Sun 8: To heck with the super bowl this was Team USA figure skating Gold! Mr Autumm watched the superbowl in his subterranean lair. Girls watched the puppy bowl. I keep busy in the kitchen. Bacon wrapped smokies, faux-viche, potato wedges with spinach artichoke dip, quac and chips, zucchini fritters
Mon 9: Big kiddo skates- we have a carpool for this one with neighbors. One less trip out is heavenly. Leftover Monday continues: gyros
Tues 10: Tonight! No activities except for for dress sparkling. I’ve been feeling “off” all day. Probably something easy from the freezer and assorted leftovers
Weds 11: Big kiddo theater. Both kiddos skate. Requests for white chicken chili have been made. I should portably go start soaking the beans. Grocery run scheduled
Thurs 12: Big kiddo has an orthodontist appt. Might bump the white chicken chili to then for something soft- she’s supposed to get the stronger wire
Fri 13: Meatball subs? Store had some chicken meatballs on sale. Might move this to Sunday when I have a committee meeting the others can handle this
Sat 14: Feeling like Thai take out might be in order. Leftovers make for easy lunches
Take care everyone! Happy cooking and eating and may all of your storage containers be accounted for!
Yay on the gyro meat! Also, excellent reminder on zuppa toscana, thanks.
The Winter Olympics have been a real joy to watch!
I’ve had that soup on my mind for a while now. Hopefully next week at casa lingua!
