We’re Getting A Dave’s Hot Chicken

Does anyone have experience with this chain?
We are decidedly lacking in FF chicken places, KFC and Chik-Fil-A being our only options.
Hopefully worth a try.

Tagging @PedroPero because a quick search shows that he’s a frequent hot chickener at DHC. But what I’ve read on a local-to-me FB Eats page seems to be very good.

“Nice late night joint for chicken. Fresh crispy fries and tenders!”

“They actually season their chicken!”

“medium spice which isn’t hot but is flavor packed! The jump to HOT! is hot FYI which i also love. Hot will give you head spice tingles.”

“I am not a big chain guy but I got the slider and tender combo with HOT spice level and it was exactly what I was looking for the other day! A head tingling back end spice heat in the mouth laying on a bed of kale slaw with Dave’s sauce that did just the trick for lunch”

I’ve been a few times. My middle school aged son and his friends are fairly obsessed with the place. (It’s got some sort of relationship with the rapper Drake, which helps; they do freebies on his birthday, for example.)

The menu is very limited: You can get basically chicken or chicken on bread (with a pickle slice or two, IIRC), at maybe 7 or 8 spice levels between nothing at all and “you need to sign a waiver to proceed.” Side options include fries and/or an extra side of sauce. (And they might have mac and cheese too, now that I think about it.)

I’ve not tried the sign-a-waiver level, but the hottest one before that is not what I would consider crazy hot. The chicken itself is pretty decent: Tender, very flavorful, not quite as crunchy as I would prefer.

I’m very much not a fast food kind of guy but I think the food here is pretty good for what it is. Certainly worth a taste if you’re nearby and like spicy stuff.

It’s pretty tasty and consistent, quality wise, I’ve never had any other “Hot Chicken” so I can’t compare it to anything else. The only other fried chicken joints in my hood are Popeyes, which I like, and KFC which I don’t care for anymore. It’s close by and hits the spot when I’m in the mood for FC, I usually get 2 meals out of the slider/tender combo.

I can’t figure out where they are in SF or Peninsula

Sunnyvale is the most Peninsula-y they get. 118 E El Camino Real, Sunnyvale, CA, 94087

I’ve wondered why a place with that name only sells chicken pieces and nothing bone-in. It must be a cost and/or logistical thing as it would seem to be a natural. We have one near us but I’ve never been. It just seems like a not so real product for some reason.

I tried it once. Incredibly underwhelmed…overcooked chicken in a thick layer of sugar and chili powder.

Never tempted to try it again

Their chicken is fine. Portions are pretty big. I cannot stand the hot chicken seasoning at any of these places.

Including Popeyes?
That’s my only experience.

No. It’s different. The Nashville Hot Chicken places have this cayenne/sugar/seasoning shake that goes on after the chicken is fried and when it is served. I don’t enjoy the raw, powdery effect of the seasoning and find the flavors off putting. Hot chicken is big business, so I am in the minority, I think. I always order it without.

Have you tried Krispy Krunchy Chicken? There are places in Phoenix and Medford.

I haven’t. I don’t drive anymore so I rarely go to gas stations anymore.
We do have a guy now making fresh Indian food at the Talent Truck Stop and I intend to try it.

My favorite thing at Krispy Krunchy Chicken is the fish  … really tasty! Good fries too.

They don’t show fish on their menu.

They have shrimp and fish. Maybe not at all locations.

Mine does have shrimp.
