Hello. We were going to go to Gramercy Tavern, but now mom is requesting Indian for her birthday or, barring that, Mexican. She is really into decor, whereas I care more about the food. Is there a place that will make us both happy, ideally in or close to Curry Hill? I see a few things on line that could fit the bill, but would prefer your personal recommendations. Much obliged.
Both upscale? It would help to narrow this down.
Yes!
I haven’t been to Semma, but have heard positive reviews. I have been to Jazba, and it’s very nice. But I’m hard-pressed to think of an Indian restaurant with amazing decor. Maybe…
CHATTI is very attractive and has an interesting and tasty Kerala cuisine. I think if you look you will see a report from last summer. Its on W 37th St near 7th Ave. and if you are interested you should check to see whether they are still offering their brunch which gives you a chance to taste lots of different flavors.
My recommendation for upscale Indian dining would be Indian Accent. We’ve been there often for dinner and lunch. Delicious food, excellent service, and lovely, comfortable ambiance. It’s in Midtown.
I actually took her here a few years ago!
This is a great idea, thank you. I have not been here yet and it won’t involve her travelling too far.
Thanks for all of these. I am a Semma fan and was thinking about taking her there, but am still hoping to find something in the 20s. My mom is kind of old, scared of winter, etc., etc.
Baazi, Chatti, or Lungi would be my picks (take an Uber, the better food is worth it).
Haven’t eaten at Semma but have heard good things. Haven’t eaten at Indian Accent in the past year but have positive reports from palates I trust (it had declined before that since I had last eaten there). Many of the other fine dining places are style over substance at the moment.
I just went to Passerine which is in the 20s, but I wouldn’t recommend it over the ones above. Nor Bungalow.
Thanks. I think Chatti is the winner. Not too far.
Enjoy. Excellent food and cocktails, and a pretty room.
Has she been to Cosme?
Ooh, that’s an interesting idea. I have been but never to Chatti so am kind of leaning towards trying something new. I will defer to the birthday girl.
Look forward to seeing wherever you end up
@Jeepyland how did your mom’s birthday dinner turn out?
I was hoping to have tales of culinary adventure to share but we wound up cancelling everything because of the blizzard. I picked up a bunch of sandwiches at Eataly and brought them to her place. Pretty lame, but she seemed happy to be able to stay indoors. My trip back to Montreal was cancelled as well, which gave me an extra day to squeeze in a few more friends and even see another show.
That was some terrible weather! Eataly does tasty stuff, though, and as long as you could spend time together. (The restaurants aren’t going anywhere.)
