Bentley had a big evening: he caught a baby bunny in the yard.
We don’t have a “drop it” command, so both of us were just chasing and yelling at him, which he very visibly did not understand.
Finally he did drop it and mom took a reluctant dog inside while I assessed the bunny sitch. It was alive but wounded. I used a garden shovel to gently place it near where the momma might find it (and ten min later it was in fact gone) and then spent the next two hours telling the dog he couldn’t go outside. He was verklempt.
He goes out to potty several times a night (old) so she will have to leash him every time tonight so he doesn’t go looking for the nest/potentially find the injured or dead bunny again.
It went great! She had an upper respiratory infection - as usual- so she got some Convenia and all of a sudden she’s eating like a champ. She had bloodwork. They took her blood pressure and it was very high and they couldn’t repeat it so tomorrow when I take Z in for his spa bath I’ll take her, too, and they will try to do another reading. The vet took a long time with her. I’m really glad I changed vets. He had all her records. One of her pupils is also more dilated than the other. She has a follow up appointment in 2 weeks. She’s chipper today. I wonder if she’ s relieved she has a new vet.
That’s great news! I’m so happy that things went well with the new vet, and that Mika has her appetite back. It looks like she is in good hands now.
Thanks for the update!
The day after Bentley caught a baby bunny, I almost stepped on another baby in broad daylight in the back yard. Do these things have a suicide wish or what? I thought to myself…
This evening in the tiny fenced-in area we allow him, he caught another one. Mom saw it first and said to me, “Oh shit, there’s a bunny.” Next thing you know, it was in his mouth. Again he dropped it when we yelled at him, and again I thought, “These things are not very smart.”
He’s so obsessed with this game he hardly ate today.
My rabbits have been pretty reclusive, but when they are out in the open and freeze (go Tharn?) in panic or to hide they are very vulnerable. Especially the young, dumb, ones.
I like my older female rabbit. She us smart enough to hop away and find cover when i come near. My neighbors feed theirs so they tend to be bold.
I’ve boarded both the kitties at the vet until Sunday morning. We had yet another structural catastrophe in my condo high rise building. We’ve had many serious water pipe failures over the decades (how convenient that the originating developer went bankrupt) -so Thursday night the closed water loop that services all our individual heat pumps sprang a Niagara like leak and had to be shut down, drained and repaired Friday - which happened to be the hottest day of the year, of course. I proactively took the kitties in to the vet Friday morning, because if I needed to stay in a hotel (I just got out of the hospital and I’m not going to tough it out with the heat index being 110!) I couldn’t take them with me.
Well, the repair failed immediately and I decamped to a Residence Inn north of the city (the Hilton Inn around the corner immediately filled up -wonder why…) . Repairs are going to be re-attempted today. I will need to go home to check on repairs and if necessary book another room for the night somewhere. If things are bad I will call the vet and have their stay extended. Ziggy is getting another medicated spa bath!! He felt so much better after the first one!
I don’t think they caught any. They were meant to track deer, I think. Running after wee critters was a distraction. Granddaddy’s dogs were extremely obedient. It was amazing to watch him interact with them. They also adored him.
