Give him treats as a reward after. I’ve been giving mine a dab of catnip on her cat tree. Last time I was forgetting but she didn’t, ran straight up the cat tree … waiting.
A shot of Bentley a couple summers ago, to help us both remember that all this darn snow and ice will eventually melt :). He really needs daily walks, even in his dotage, so I took him out once today but worried the whole time about the salt on the street…
I’ve liberally cat nipped his cardboard scratching thingy. Funny, none of my cats has ever seemed particularly interested in catnip. Dried salmon cat treats, yes …
I swear, a good 30% of my conversation with medium H is “How long ago did you feed him? He’s crying again.”
Classic. Our chonk is hungry all the time. 24/7. Eat, eat, eat, eat, barf.
What gets me is I’ll give them a decent amount of can cat. And 5 minutes after Finnegan is done, and I’m in the kitchen preparing my OWN meal…he’s in there with me looking up at me expectantly like “Oh - it’s time to feed me?”
NO YOU’RE NOT GETTING MORE FOOD! But he still tries. And now Murphy’s getting into the act - even though he eats a LOT less can cat than Finny does. But he’s learned “if Mom’s in the kitchen, maybe - JUST MAYBE! - we’ll get more food!”
:::Sigh:::
Laszlo’s vet advised us to limit his food, as he was a little overweight. So he gets half a small can in the morning and 32g of dry food, meted out during the rest of the day. Also cheese from H’s lunch at 1:30pm, so you’ll find the cat sitting patiently in the living room at that time, waiting for his snack.
There is a saying that if you need to remember to do something at a particular time, like take a pill, give your cat a treat at that time. You might forget, but the cat never will.
Yeah, Finny is getting all porkster on me (as was Alfie, his late brother). After last vet visit, he’s also on a gastroenteric Rx food from Purina, so he gets a sixth of a can of that with about the same of “regular” can cat. And because Murphy has taken a liking to the Rx food, he also gets a bit of that with regular can cat. He rarely finishes his breakfast/dinner, so by feeding Finnegan less, I know he’ll finish Murphy’s bowl, giving him the right amount. Their dry cat drops from their auto-feeder twice a day - I want to say a half cup each time? Finn eats less of that; Murphy likes it and will crunch on that more regularly.
Chonk gets one small can of wet food every day, dispersed in as many increments as possible, but he literally begs for food 5 min after “finishing” his portion, which means it’s mostly smooshed into the corners of the bowl
The rest of the day it’s dry food. He’s a fatty. He’s never gonna lose weight.
SO was the Chubster (Alfalfa) and so is Finnegan (I call it “big-boned” for him. )
But the vet was a bit worried about some blood work, so I figured I’d get the (much more expensive) gastroenteric food and mix it with the grain-free stuff I can get at Petco.
Oh, we tried it all. Diet food / special weight-loss wet food. It’s hopeless. He’s at a whopping 15lbs ATM
Yeah, this isn’t for weight loss, although it’s supposed to fill him up and not make him eat as much as an added bonus. Pffftttt…THAT didn’t happen! LOL They said “…it looks like Finnegan has pancreatitis and hyperlipidemia, which could be what is causing Finnegan to be overweight. Pancreatitis can also lead to lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea if the inflammation of the pancreas worsens”.
They also said “It would also be a good idea to start Finnegan on Omega 3s, a supplement to bring fat content down in his body.” So they sold me a liquid form that gets dropped into his can cat once a day.
Good luck
My Kate cat. Every day. I have photos. But I miss him. He always apologized.
