Just got a call from our vet. Jake tested positive for feline leukemia, and he may or may not have feline HIV, which reduces his life expectancy to 2-3 years at the most. Either way, he is a very sick boy.
We are unlikely to have him tested for the F-HIV (another $200+ bill), but we are hoping against hope that his bonded mate Jonesy has not picked up the feline HIV. We’ll schedule an appointment with him as soon as we can.
I’m so sorry Sending good vibes your way. He’s lucky to have a loving and caring mom, dad, and baby brother. Just take it one day at a time, and enjoy his presence.
There was a long lap nap before Murphy’s first I-Sit-On-Momma Cuddle of the Day. I expect there will be at least two more before the day is done, as he is rather insistent.
Thank you all for your kind words. I need to keep reminding myself that these boys need a loving home, regardless of how long they will be around. That this is not about me, or us.
And so, we will love on them & take care of them as good as we can, and for as long (or short) as we may.
Feline leukemia spreads through close, direct contact with an infected cat. The boys have been grooming, play-fighting and sleeping on top of one another, so it is almost impossible for Jake to have it, but not Jonesy.
FIV spreads through deep bite wounds, so we might just luck out on that.
Ay yi yi…it rains, it poors and we still unconditionly lovenour fur buddies no matter the financial cost. FLV is a tough one to deal with. “Kitteh” to you!
