So, my husband and I went to a tasting at a little wine shop last evening. As it wrapped up, I praised the owner’s dog who was A Very Good Girl for lounging behind the counter quietly while the humans were sipping wine. When the shop owner mentioned it was time for them to go home and eat, the dog immediately licked her lips the second she heard eat. My dog does the same thing, and will also ask for food that way. We speak in words and our dogs—at least some—respond in sign language!

dogs absolutely ‘pick up’ on words - and noises . . .
we have to use the NATO alphabet to spell things out - using just the plain w-a-l-k, he learned that. so we went to whiskey-alpha-lima-kilo.
now, , , , he’s learned having a whiskey means “lets go!”
and tango has been learned as t-r-e-a-t . . .
no matter inside or out, if I start using a knife the cutting board, he hears it and is shortly right there to help out . . .
