I had a cat a few years ago that did the same. He was on his best behaviour the whole time I was away, regular bowel movements always in the litter box the whole time I was gone, but the day I’d come home he’d leave a turd on the floor just inside the door to my apartment. It was his own odd way of welcoming me home.
