Unusual bowl/baking dish

On New Scandinavian Cooking today, Andreas made sausages using a square bowl/baking dish that looked like this EXCEPT that there was a notch in the rim in the middle of one side, about the shape that would accommodate your thumb. There did not appear to be a lip on the exterior, so I don’t think it was for pouring. But since holding the bowl when emptying it seems easy enough, I am wondering if there is another reason for the notch. Is anyone familiar with such a design element?

More likely, a chopsticks rest.

I should have specified that this is a BIG bowl - probably 2+ quarts. He mixed up a couple of pounds of sausage meat in it.
