Trader Joe's YEA/NAY/MEH, 2023 Edition

Had their Kimbap for lunch yesterday. Pretty good for a pre-made frozen item, but not even close to what you’d get in a decent restaurant. Made me thing I could probably stand more supermarket sushi than I’ve thought.

Tried the chicken pupusas tonight and they’re pretty good! We did the stovetop (frying) method–nice browning/crisping. Served with kim chee, which I sliced thin like curtido, and it worked quite well.

On your recommendation, I tried the hot Italian sausage: it’s just right for me, not too hot.

I couldn’t find directions on the package so lined a half sheet pan with foil, 325° F for 20 minutes, turned over, then another 20 minutes.

Easy clean up, didn’t produce much grease.

Oh, I never said it was too hot for me. Just a warning for most people as this does pack more punch than any “hot” Italian sausages I’ve ever purchased anywhere else.

Glad you liked it, too. I’ve only ever pan-fried them, or squoze out the filling for pasta sauce.

I see I’m not the only person who uses the word “squoze”!

Tj’s has “hand pies” in a two pack in the fresh bakery.Pricey , but surprisingly good.

I usually buy the pub cheese with chiles but I just discovered TJ’s unexpected cheddar with hatch chiles. It’s a tub of soft cheddar spread and reminds alot of the old wispride crocks of cheese, which I rarely ate and didn’t miss til I found this spread. Not even sure if it is even similar but it activated an old memory. I prefer the chili version to horseradish and it’s not overly spicy

The pub cheese with jalapeños is also a great and easy way to make a cheddar/ jalapeño burger. J ust slather some on top once the burger is done

I’ve purchased the strawberry-rhubarb hand pies several times, a YEA for me.

The pub cheese can also be used to make insta-mac & cheese.

ALERT

I’ve been calling to see when the Rabitos Royal Chocolate covered Figs with a touch of brandy were in stock since I missed them last year, so few!

I found out today that stores in my area are only getting in 20 boxes at a time. $7.99. They were nice enough to save me 7 and I saw some on the shelf and grabbed one more. They make nice little presents.

The year before last, I saved a box for myself, ate about one per month and the very last one, after a year, tasted perfect to me. (They are individually wrapped)

I get these German cookies (Lebkuchen) every year, they come with a chocolate glaze too but I prefer this one.

Not too sweet. Again, they make nice little gifts.

That’s a taste of my childhood. I prefer the chocolate glazed ones, tho

Maybe I should give them another chance.

Love these. Stock up the first time I see them. Usually sells out fast. I like the ones without the chocolate best.

These are fantastic. I’ve eyed them for years and finally bit the bullet. I also bought a box to gift.

YEA for the mini chocolate-mint star cookies. Dangerous.

Lulu LOVES these.

A Yea to the Kimbap that people elsewhere online kept raving about. My store finally had them in stock, and I bought a few. They certainly don’t compare to what you’d get in a restaurant, but surprisingly decent.

For anyone who is interested, I found them to be better letting it defrost in the refrigerator, and then just setting it out while prepping the dipping sauce I made to go with it. I didn’t mind how it came out of the microwave, but this way was preferable and a bit closer to how one would normally be served it in terms of taste/texture.

Also a yea to the Eggplant Parmigiana Sfogliatelle. Not sure if these are new/seasonal or just new to me, but I thought they were pretty darn good.

Oh, nice! I’m glad to have another vegetarian appetizer option.

The new and holiday stuff is slowly coming out – and may disappear just as fast, so I’m stocking up on anything I think I might like :joy:
