Trader Joe's YEA/NAY/MEH, 2023 Edition

For sure a great way with leftovers, but I just use plain leftover rice as the base.

What I was hoping for was something I didn’t have to doctor too much, because at that point I haven’t saved much time or effort.

I have a friend who buys their plain frozen rice, which I always wondered about when I saw it in the case, and then I found it in his freezer

I just got some and am going to try it out as a base the next time I make some char siu

We seldom have rice left over, you would need to see my spouse and son in shovel mode… :upside_down_face:

I picked some up today, I will need to eat around the tofu though.

There’s tofu in there? (I feel that way about baby corn or edamame :joy:).

And seaweed!

I have to say I’ve never noticed the tofu or the seaweed, maybe cuz I tend to add a bunch of other things (also I don’t mind tofu at all).

Are you a nay on the Japanese fried rice?

Probably Meh, nay was too strong for something that I’m not actually offended by the taste of.

All their fried rices need doctoring for my palate, but clearly they are very popular in general!

I’ve yet to encounter a prepared supermarket dish that doesn’t require some doctoring.

Marie Callenders Chicken Pot Pie is good as-is.

Agree. Have you tried the taller, vertical version of the MC pies? I tried a package of 2 from Grocery Outlet, and was surprised at how good they are.

I’ll take your word for it. I don’t like pot pie.

Now that’s a thought deserving of its own thread. I nominate Panera’s Autumn Harvest Squash Soup, which is seasonal AT Panera but year-round in supermarkets that stock Panera.

Build it, and they will post

I’d add the TJ’s tomato & red pepper soup, which is pretty awesome on its own (even if I still end up adding RPF or some heat source - perhaps not enough to qualify as ‘doctoring up’).

Taller, vertical version?

I haven’t had to doctor most other frozen dishes from TJs.

I avoid most of the Chinese ones (other than dumplings) because they are too sweet, but aside from that nothing much to change.

Yes. They’re called “Pub Style” pies. Two flavors, Steak & Ale, and Roasted Chicken.

Tony’s Chocolonely is THE BEST! Especially their toffee pretzel flavor. My only complaint is that the pieces don’t break into consistent sizes because of the cute jumbled way they designed them.

Trader Joe’s makes a steak and stout pie similar to that but closed at the top. My husband likes them. They used to make a chicken curry one that I really liked but of course it got discontinued, like pretty much everything I have liked.
