Trader Joe's 2024: YEA/NAY/MEH

I think it varies based on source, but I’ve encountered seeds.

Also a yea for this. It’s not terribly salty (a plus, it means I can add salt if needed but use as much of the seasoning as I want without overdoing it). I was suprised by how mild the heat is. I shook some over and then stirred it into a bowl of sautéed vegetables, and garlic really dominated. I added extra red pepper flakes, and that brought it into better balance for me.

For sure, but I can tell it’ll be a useful low-lift option for me, too. I think it would work well stirred into yogurt or sour cream as an easy condiment or dip.

Finally picked some up yesterday!

Raspberry filled butter cookies, very nice. Not very many in the package but that’s probably for the best.

Yes, both the lower spice level and the lower salt might lead someone to meh or nay it, but to me they are benefits, because I can always dial those things up if I want to, but I can’t take them out once they’re in the jar!

Re dip, I think the chunky garlic might be a bit of a deterrent, but I love the onion salt for that purpose (it has garlic powder in it as well as chives).

I was thinking that if it were made ahead, the garlic would soften up so the flavor would blend and the texture would be less obtrusive.

I’ve gotten the sky valley already, problem is they are midgets so far. As I recall they tend to have larger ones as the season goes on, but right now, I think 10 or more in the bag whereas later seem to have 7 or 8 for the same weight. I just bought a citrus juicer and what them markets a recalling juice oranges are expensive ,not good looking and often the size of a tennis ball. not good

YAY for the frozen Bacalhau Tartlets–creamy and flaky and not too fishy or salty. This time I actually remembered to buy two! The only downside is they take 35 minutes to cook so you do have to plan ahead if you want them for lunch. They make a good appetizer or side if you’re already cooking something else.

MEH on the papadums (lentil/chickpea crisps in a bag, like chips). Very strong lentil (i.e., dirt) flavor, not enough salt (strong statement from me, as I have a very low salt tolerance), but nice texture, similar to Pringles.

Alternative take is a huge YAY from our family on the papadum chips. We all love them. Crispy, tasty, different.

I feel like I’ve tried two different lentil/papadum crisps/chips/snacks and one was better that the other, though now a quick search only finds the ones in the purple bag, hmm

They are classic fried papads, I like them too, though not as much as the rice and lentil curls, which are papads in a different shape.

I was just thinking of the circular ones the other day as an idea to top with things for the superbowl — tuna tartare or smoked salmon or something like that. Or salsa fresca, which would make a masala papad!

But my store rarely has them in stock — I think they can only order a case at a time, and they go very fast.

What??!!! I’ve been eyeing those since they introduced them, but that’s a long time for those tiny things!

Have you tried the other similar seasoning in a squat jar? Soffritto Blend I think. I think that’s intended as an oil seasoning, but might work well for a dip.

If you know you’ll be in that day, call when they open and they’ll save stuff for you.

Thank you, and yes I’ve done that occasionally, but the issue is more that they get a box of the papads once every few weeks (months?) and I don’t know when. Like the kimbap I saw once, never before and never again :joy:

Also, I have plenty of (indian) papads at home that I can use, so this is more of a novelty purchase. When it was puff pastry running out. I called ahead!

Something is very wrong with me; I buy those jarred seasonings and then never use them!

I’m trying hard to control myself from buying new ones.

It’s not just you :joy: — you’re in good company here

I have to make sure they are in front of me when I’m going to cook, or I forget. (This new one though would have worked like a charm for your shrimp scampi.)

Qualified YEA for the frozen honey walnut shrimp. Taste was maybe a bit too sweet but overall pretty good served over rice. At 425° in the toaster oven, for 2 minutes more than the suggested 12 minutes, I thought the result could have been crispier.

Our favorite is the orange chicken, which is a much better value, but the shrimp is going to get a spot in the rotation…… at least with some prep experimentation.

Maybe it’s faster in an air fryer, but I don’t have that.

They are sold in 4# bags. Some years the fruit is larger, sometimes smaller. The 2024 harvest is particularly delicious.
