Trader Joe's 2024: YEA/NAY/MEH

Peanut Butter with Honey is YEA.

Like “I can just eat this with a spoon” kind of YEA

satay … sauce?

What might that be?

For me, the benchmark for that would be *bumbu kacang," a chunky peanut slop made with sweet dark ketchup and garlic, and found among countless Jakarta street vendors.

But wait … Padang (a city in western Sumatra) would like a word.

They have some spicy yellow goop that can also be found in the Big Durian. Not a fan of this one, but here we are.

Then there’s Bali’s sate lilit made with minced fish; it can be served with sambal matah, a sauce made with peppers and onions, among other ingredients. Coincidentally, sambal matah was a Trader Joe’s product years ago.

Naturally there’s more, but I’m too hungry right now.

TJ’s will just dry the F out of anything, bag it and sell it, I guess. I don’t understand the concept. Maybe it’s great for preppers?

I’m thinking it’s probably as a low carb snack.

Oh. That’s kind of sad. I thought low-carb folks could go all in on the cheese & nuts front?

I don’t follow any diet, but much prefer the latter if given the choice :woman_shrugging:t3:

It is just a guess on my part, honestly. I am definitely Team Cheese.

Does the lemon pesto have nuts in it?

Just bought Monday. Haven’t opened but happy they’re a yeah.

Yes, almonds: https://www.traderjoes.com/home/products/pdp/lemon-pesto-sauce-075930

Might give it a spin then. For whatever reason he isn’t allergic to those. Just every other tree nut. Well not pine nut or coconut either.

Nay to both frozen peas and to fresh green beans. They were both very woody, stringy, starchy recently. I think it’s a time of year thing.

They usually have 2 or 3 kinds of frozen peas — regular, organic, and baby. The baby peas are pretty solid year round.

(The frozen haricots vert are also good — fine green beans not the fat ones).

Last couple times I shopped they only had one kind of frozen peas. The organic. And I usually go for the fresh haricot but they were out so I grabbed the regular fresh green beans. They ruined the Thai curry I used them in. I’ll pick them out of any leftovers honestly before eating more.

Extended storage time and minimized shipping costs. More variety in your pantry if you have limited fridge and shelf space, and the ability to improvise recipes on the fly, with fewer grocery trips.

You might be surprised how many prepared foods labeled as USA-made are assembled from reconstituted dried imported ingredients. Apparently it is rare for shelf-stable ingredients/prepared foods NOT to be sourced and dehydrated in China. This was reported on during the times when pet foods adulterated with melamine were killing dogs (also cats) in America, and baby formula made and sold IN China was poisoning infants there.

Now that TJ’s has a new location closer to home I gave many of the items covered here a try.
The olive crackers, lemon pesto, Dulce ice cream, Mini ravioli, cherries, mini peppers, lemon dried pasta, lemon ravioli all made it into the cart.

Little tiny cheese ravioli

I had a pan with butter and olive oil and garlic through a press, transferred ravioli, black pepper and fresh Parmesan.

Supposed to feed 3.

I’ve decided I much prefer the lemon-ricotta ravioli. I think these tiny ones might appeal to little kids, maybe in chicken broth.
