Tracking household grocery expenses - what do you spend?

Potatoes go on sale on Wednesday morning - 5 pound bag for $.88 (limit 2). I had just finished up my previous load of potatoes late last week, so this is a good time for a sale and a good time to re-stock. Worse comes to worse, I can always make some gnocchi for the freezer!

They also have a 2 pound block of cheese on sale for $5, so I’ll grab one of those, as well.

All in all, I feel pretty well stocked in the freezer and the pantry.

Cream cheese goes on sale tomorrow morning 3 (blocks) for $5. Sunshine really liked that Lemon Cream Cheese Pasta, so I’ll make that again.

I’ll also make up some spinach & cream cheese perogies for freezer stock. Neighbor #2 likes them, so it won’t hurt to have extra.

There is also cabbage on sale for $.68/pound, probably wouldn’t hurt to grab a head and make up another batch of cabbage soup. The ladies both enjoyed it and I liked it, as well.

cabbage is a killer stir-fry - protein of choice, or none.

Thanks…

I printed the recipe.

I’m averaging $300 CAD on Groceries, including TP / Paper Towels / Detergent per week, for 3 people. My DCs and I are barely eating out or eating take-out for dinner these days.

I’m probably spending around $30 CAD on my own coffee shop coffee, fast food drive thru lunches and take-out single pizza slices each week, when I’m out running errands.

I spent $200 CAD on Groceries today.

$150 on food and drinks at the indie grocery store and $50 on TP/ Paper Towels/ Ziplocs, etc at the chain store.

Around $90 CAD at the butcher last Sat, for 4 lb pork shoulder, a really big whole chicken (at least 4 lbs, which has been feeding us Sat to Tue, plus chicken stock in the freezer), and a pound of ground beef. I didn’t have to buy more meat this week.

Pineapple, which has been around $3.99 to $5.99 CAD a piece for the past 10 years cost me $8.99 at my local indie market today. I know it probably is cheaper at No Frills / Food Basics etc. I don’t have the time to price check before buying right now.

Today was my first shopping trip this week. I’ll also keep track of how much I spend between now and Sunday night.

It was a cold (well cold for AZ) but successful bicycle ride to two grocery stores this morning. In checking my digital coupons (before I left) I found lettuce on sale for 99 cents, so I picked up a head of lettuce, along with the cream cheese.

At the other store, I found a HUGE head of cabbage. I think I’ll use half in a stir-fry or fried rice (thanks @mig) and the other half in a soup. Maybe a lettuce and cabbage soup (along with other vegetables)?? I’ve made lettuce soup in the past and I’ve made cabbage soup – I’m guessing this might work??

lettuce and cabbage need very different cook times in soup. just keep that in mind.

I figured I would make the lettuce soup first, then let the cabbage simmer in it until cooked/softened.

This was my last lettuce soup (made with immersion blender) and it turned out really GREAT!!

In the process of making dinner tonight, I noticed my potatoes were getting old. I was worried they’d go bad, so I made up a batch on Gnocchi tonight. I will freeze this for later use.

Exciting Saturday night at Dan’s house – making gnocchi!!

I found 6 drumsticks on clearance for $1.36 – two drumsticks per person which worked out to about 45 cents per serving for the protein.

In addition to the above chicken, I also found this ham on clearance. I think Sunday’s dinner is going to be Creamed Chopped Ham on a homemade bun. This should be enough ham for 3 people.

I don’t know what vegetable to serve on the side – maybe carrots or beets??

Nothing really on sale this week, except cheese.

I’ve (kind of) got the next week planned out and between the freezer and the pantry – all good!! I will have to do some baking, but I like to bake.

Oddly, I had a dream last night about pizza. I have no idea why I was dreaming about making a pizza, but with cheese on sale – I’ll take it as a sign to make a pizza (at some point).

I’ll also be checking on the clearance items. I had two GREAT scores, yesterday – so fingers crossed that there will be more.

I just scored some chicken legs, too. I’m going to make this easy pollo guisado with them.

Again, not much on sale this week. Potatoes are going on sale on Wednesday morning (2) 5 pound bags for $3. Since, I’m out of potatoes, I’ll grab two bags. Generic shredded Parmesan cheese is also on sale. Between and the potatoes and the Parmesan cheese, I’ll be making Gnocchi for dinner.

I can also make a shredded potato casserole or potato soup. Sunshine is getting tired of my Onion, Carrot and Potato casserole, so I really don’t want to force that on her, if I can help it.

One store has advertised that they are going to keep green cabbage at a fixed price of $.68 per pound. If that is true, I may pick up another head of cabbage and do something with it.

There are a lot of “Superbowl Munchies” on sale, but I can’t really use them to make a decent meal. I’m hoping for a better selection next week after the “Big Game” is over.

I’ll lean on the freezer and try to get creative. Luckily, every one likes that (newly discovered) tuna cake recipe, so that is going into early repeat. And I still have brats in the freezer – maybe a brat pasta bake??

What about scalloped potatoes/au gratin? Got any ham?

Here’s ATK’s – calls for heavy cream: www.mercurynews.com/2017/12/17/americas-test-kitchens-ultimate-scalloped-potatoes

You can substitute half and half for all the milk and cream combined. Maybe add a scant amount of flour or cornstarch to the milk at the end of simmering.

This one also looks good and uses a roux: https://www.101cookingfortwo.com/everyday-scalloped-potatoes-and-ham/#recipe

And here’s a Southern cabbage casserole: https://www.simplyrecipes.com/cabbage-casserole-recipe-11803647

Loaded cabbage soup (with potatoes!):

I’ve made the ATK recipe, but that’s it.

I do have a chunk of ham in the freezer, Great idea!!

The cabbage casserole looks interesting, as well…

Thanks!!

Funny story… I served Gnocchi last night to everyone. I didn’t have any Parmesan cheese to put on top. I was forced to use some cheddar.

When I delivered dinner to Neighbor #2, I let her know that the Gnocchi was topped with cheddar instead of Parmesan cheese. She replied “I spent a lot of time in Wisconsin – Cheese is Cheese”
