Tracking household grocery expenses - what do you spend?

In checking the preview of grocery store sale circulars, there isn’t much on sale this week (that I can use). I kind of expected that – it usually happens after Christmas.

One store does have canned tuna 10 cans for $5.00 (Sat. only). So, I’ll definitely get those. I know I can make Tuna Melts, Tuna Cakes & Tuna Noodle Casserole. Maybe I’ll try to make Tuna Fried Rice or a Tuna White Pizza??

I did “Feed the Freezer” when items were on sale/clearance, so we are stocked fairly well and I can lean on the freezer next week.

I’ll also be checking for “clearance” items. (fingers crossed).

Partial Success for my early morning ride to the grocery store… They did have the tuna on sale (10 cans for $5), but all they had was tuna in vegetable oil – no water.

I can use it for Tuna cakes and Tuna Noodle Casserole. I really would have liked to have gotten some in water for making Tuna melts, but we’ll make do.

i press the oil out and still use it for tuna melts or other sandwiches.

You can press the oil out, into a pan, and use that oil to fry onions or peppers before making tuna pasta or risotto. I didn’t start doing that until recently. I made some Italian pastas with tuna as a change from casserole, which we have liked. I will link to a couple.

Thank you – Yes, I saw some Lemon pasta on youtube that I wanted to try – good to know I can mix in a can of that tuna with it.

Back when I was a kid, many years ago, you could only get tuna in oil. My mother would drain out the oil, using the top to press down, and then rinse it off before using.

Same here… I remember my mother doing that, as well.

I have some tuna in water (stock) that I can use for tuna melts, etc.

When I’m making tuna salad for work sandwiches, I mix a can of Genova tuna in oil with a can of Bumble Bee solid white in water after squishing out the oil and water in both. (Both purchased in bulk packages at BJs Wholesale Club). The flavor is deepened slightly with the oil-packed tuna.

Good idea - I will use this!

Yes! I have never enjoyed tuna casserole but a quick pasta using pantry staples is my thing. Think of a puttanesca-like prep, except with tuna flaked in at the end. Oil-packed tuna beats water-packed for that.

I grew up with tuna casserole (homemade white sauce, not canned mushroom soup ), and I still like it.

I didnt start making pasta with tuna or sardines until 2020.

These days I alternate.

This morning I picked up some bone-in Pork Chops on sale $.97/pound and some avocados for $.57/each (they were small – so I got six). I also got a cucumber for $.69!

I’ve got some nice Ahi Tuna in the freezer that I can use to make Sunshine some California (style) rolls, but with tuna instead of crab. I can also make avocado toast for brunch/lunch??

Extra avocado can be frozen, as slices or make guacamole with 1-2 of them and freeze in 2 T portions. Ready for quick two person sized sides of guac with tacos, eggs, burritos or as spread for spicy avocado toast.

YEAH!! Thank you!

I bet you could omit the kimchi and it would still be good. Maybe add some scallions, soy sauce, or sesame seeds or something to flavor the tuna.

Tuna Cobb is a thing, too!

I had to look that one up

It does look interesting. Moreover, I have some cream cheese in stock and can easily make up a nice loaf to put it in.

Thanks.
