I didn’t want to read ancient tipping threads, so I thought I’d ask here (since the tip is part of the money you spend, and therefore part of the budget):
Do peeps tip more for delivery than takeout? We do. If we get takeout, i.e. pick up the food ourselves at the resto, we usually tip 10% for the FOH & BOH.
But when we get delivery, we tip 20% since the driver / delivery person has to get the food to our place — more if the weather is abysmal & the roads treacherous.
I leave a 15% tip on all my restaurant meals - it doesn’t matter if I eat in or get take out or delivery. I only get meals delivered from two restaurants mostly because they are a little too far away to walk if I were to pick up (it’s a half hour walk each way). Every other restaurant I get take out from is within a 10 minute walk from home. I like shopping in the Byward Market and the Italian grocer and both delis I shop at now sell prepared meals in store but I don’t tip on those. I used to give a 10% tip on take out/delivery but since the restaurants have seen a decline in business since covid, I am tipping a little extra. I figure someone still has to take my order, make the meal, wash dishes, etc and these things are always appreciated.
I don’t think that it is the minimum but an average (not only for us but also when we go out with others). In addition, at least here in the Bay Area many restaurants have “healthcare mandate” which can be 3-6% (depending on the area) on your bill - we tend to include the mandate into our tip calculation as we are not paying 25%+ tips

Nope. Exactly the same. Zero.
Although as mentioned upthread, delivery services seem to have recently started to add multiple fees. Including a separate “delivery” charge - FFS. Why a separate charge? Delivering is what they do. You can’t order food from a delivery service without them delivering it.
Yes, but the pay for delivery drivers is abysmal ($3.99 at Grubhub or DoorDash, at least when I was doing that shit years ago), and more often than not bundles orders from several different restaurants going to several different customers, so the company only has to pay out the base pay once. The result is often sub-par temp food.
The tip is usually the biggest part of the drivers’ pay, in that I never accepted an order that didn’t include a tip.
I can only speak for the wonderful system in the US, of course.
I don’t know that I’d tip more than a few coins at that wage
However, minimum wage here in PA is an embarrassing $2.83/hr, so we generally do as good Americans are expected, and supplement our servers’ income since the employers can’t be arsed.
Seattle just eliminated the tip credit, now minimum wage for everyone is $20.76, statewide is $16.66. An actual livable wage is $30+ so I wouldn’t say to stop tipping, just that it’s not so life-or-death here.
State rules vary widely, people may want to know before they travel:
Agreed that even with a higher minimum wage it is still not a livable wage yet but it is getting closer. But I am also wondering if the profit margins of restaurants in low minimum wage areas are so much higher because the prices on the menu aren’t often that significantly lower
If I dine out . I start at 20 % . I could go up or down , depending upon the service . The food is secondary to me . I dine out to relax and be served.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just make it a comfortable experience.
My opinion is that is someone is bringing food TO YOUR HOUSE they deserve at least as much as what you would leave to a server while dining in. It’s a convenience I’m willing to pay for if I can’t or don’t want to go out myself.
To clarify, I’m in the NYC area so tipping is expected here. My sister and SO are both in the bar and restaurant business so I understand the impact tipping has on the workers.
i rarely get delivery. Must have been 20 years. Ordered a pizza on a rainy day and the delivery guy was surprised I gave a $5 tip. I thought to myself, really? Agree that if someone delivers you need to tip something reasonable, if nothing else gas money.
For take away, I usually leave a $1 tip on $20 or less. Mostly taco trucks. I once tipped a small bag of legal, store bought cannabis for a taco truck crew. Those guys remembered me for years, always super nice, extra food, etc…then they sold their truck.
