Mine was a Hoover family. This worked fine until my early adulthood, at which point Hoover had plasticized nearly everything.
Wahine’s family, on the other hand, enjoyed a Kirby, despite not being wealthy. Her eyes bugged out when I rolled up with the thrift store G5B.
This machine goes probably 18-20 pounds. That sounds like a lot, but our Riccar is almost as heavy. And it doesn’t have self-propulsion as does this find. Seriously, with that engaged, the Kirby is really nimble and light on its feet. Granny might not want to lift it, but pushing it is a dream.
I’m very new to this, but the “G” stands for Generation, the “5” for fifth, and I’ve yet to learn what the “B” signifies. There are Gs 1-6, and I read somewhere the 5 was produced in the mid-to-late 1990s. A sticker on this one indicates it was refurbished in 2017.
My only comparable find has been a vintage Vita-Mix that is similarly retro and rugged. Die-cast metal throughout, a huge motor, and parts that were designed to be user-replaceable. Here’s a fun fact: this Kirby lifts heavy shag carpet off its pad using only 1300 Watts. My wife’s blow dryer draws more power.
I also learned today that Kirby’s bags filter to 0.3 micron–that’s better than the competition does with their $$ HEPA bags.
Today I found the 3rd of 2023, 6th overall. Spins fine but only had flat beater blade. There seems to be some anomaly in the fabric of spacetime in this location of the universe such that Bamixes wash up on the shores of this goodwill to die.
Basically still is. Although a lot of Scottsdale is really soulless, but they have some great restaurants

Dude, you are freaking killing me with the Bamix finds. NEVER seen one yet.
I did recently find an Oster, complete also with the big cup for the immersion tool and also the smallish food chopper bowl assembly. It was brand new in original packaging for $8. I took it home and found out why they’d donated it - once you put the gear housing down onto the chopper bowl it was darned near impossible to remove it. But after a few uses it loosened up.
And the motor has a rheostat so you can run from full speed down to about 25%. Not that I ever run it except full blast, but knowing I could run it slower is somehow of small joy to me. LoL.
I then gifted my 27 year old Braun immersion blender to daughter #2, who is just starting off her adult life as an employed college graduate.
I’ve been looking for a second Induction Hob/Burner, as I really like cooking on the one I purchased a few months ago.
Yesterday, I found this one at Goodwill for $17 (new is $65). It works great!! I did have to give it a good cleanup.
You’re the guy that stopped at the Lawrence Welk album? Hah! Little did you know the next one in the box was an original pressing of Her Satanic Majesties Request (Stones) in a pristine cover. Thanks for stopping at Welk!
I found this 15" Paella Pan at Goodwill today for $5. Sunshine and I had Paella at a neighbor’s party about a year ago and she has wanted it again. Since I now have a paella pan, I better learn how to make it (LOL)!!
