Yum.
I would order the Joey Rocha plate, and a Huevos a la Mexicana taco. I wish we had a place like this in Toronto.
We have dozens, maybe more. Joe’s is my favorite for breakfast, but Cisco’s and Juan in a Million have very big followings. My all time favorite, Las Manitas, was sadly bulldozed to make way for a downtown Marriott. I’ll never forgive Marriott.
Hopefully, I’ll be able to visit some day.
I should have visited Texas when my friend was living there between 2015 and 2019. I’ve only been to San Antonio, Fredericksburg, and Laredo, when I visited in the mid 90s.
Three pretty good but very different towns. Fredericksburg used to border on being a restaurant desert with not much other than subpar German food, but it has really improved. Laredo is a town in which having a local to guide you is essential but rewarding. San Antonio is a fabulous restaurant scene but, again, local knowledge is really helpful if you want to find the hidden gems. IMO for a person interested in food Texas is worth the return. Although Austin is coming along quickly, I think Houston is one of the best food towns in the USA, but it changes as quickly as New York, making it hard to stay current. Dallas gets a lot of props but having lived there in 1976 for an endless year and a half, I try to go other places. El Paso rarely enters into the conversation, but I think their approach to Mexican food is as good as any. Stacked Hatch enchiladas topped with a fried egg in most any El Paso cafe is a revelation.
Yum! Good?
The Schnitzel and Salad were good.
I realised I’m fussy about strudel. This one had a good filling, but the pastry was a bit soggy. Probably warmed in the microwave. Nice lunch, and good company.
I found a veal schnitzel at Bonimi, a Serbian restaurant on my list.
I’m not an advocate for eating veal… Just wanted to have the proper nomenclature
Lol. Well, Bonimi, the Serbian Restaurant, translates their 3 Serbian Bečka Šniclas to Chicken Viennese Schnitzel, Pork Viennese Schnitzel or Veal Viennese Schnitzel.
So-- Wiener is still being used more broadly on the western edge of Toronto than it would be used in Austria or Germany. LOL.
According to wiki, it’s the law in Austria that Wiener Schnitzel has to be veal. I guess that law doesn’t apply anywhere else. LOL.
People can get around the rule in Austria by calling pork schnitzel Wiener Art (Viennese-style), instead of Wiener Schnitzel.
I’d have what you’re having. Surprised they don’t have chilaquiles in any of those, so I guess huevos con migas would be the thing to get closest to chilaquiles and eggs. .
I’d bet a churro they could and would make chilaquiles.
Just surprised they weren’t on the menu. Then again, most folks in the US know what corn chips are. They see a thing like chilaquiles without knowing could be a WTF moment.
Heading back to a favourite upscale indie diner, White Lily Diner in Toronto, for breakfast. What should you order?
How was it? I am often drawn to patty melts and westerns, but these ingredients were far enough away from what I am used to that I was a bit lost. I think, therefore, a pastrami and mustard on rye sounds good.
I’m going this morning. It’s a great little place.
I really like their broccoli salad, breakfast sandwich, patty melt, standard breakfast and donuts.
I haven’t tried the pastrami or Western before.
I probably won’t get a patty melt because I had 2 burgers last week. I will get the breakfast patty melt on a future visit.
