Heading to the Fall Bright Tavern in Toronto tonight. What would you pick?
Sample menu
Tonight’s menu:
Ontario White Asparagus → Beef Brisket → Sundae
Sourdough bread, green salad, Ontario asparagus with Hollandaise and sea bream. Chocolate cake.
I am intrigued by the cheddar and pickle dip.
I was intrigued by the dip, too. I will order it when I return with a friend, so I can share it.
I went with a daiquiri which was orange rather than lime
The white asparagus with shrimp
And the chicken sausage, which wasn’t what I expected, but I really enjoyed
I’ll be back when they change up their menu, once asparagus season is over. I expect they’ll have some interesting dishes once Ontario corn, Ontario field tomatoes, Ontario cherries and Ontario peaches are available.
Anchovy sandwich >pork shoulder> chocolate cake
Steak and eggs but I would ask for my egg to be poached instead of scrambled. If not then the blt upgrade to onion rings
That’s a very “asparagus forward” menu.
No adult beverages (Habit is a Yum brand), but full marks for originality and execution:
I went with a fried egg sandwich, @rstuart got the veggie omelette.
Somehow lines were crossed and I ended up with a sausage egg cheese rather than the bacon egg cheese I ordered LOL.
I’ll try the BLT another time.
But I’ll prob go back for the dinner menu and try a burger or sandwich next time.
What would you order at the Prague Restaurant in Scarborough, Ontario?
I googled Koleno since it was the one term I was not familiar with. It’s roasted pork knuckle / pork hock / Schweinshaxe.
The pierogi and the pickle starter plates. Maybe also the beet salad.
Although the torrential rain we’re having in the Boston area today kind of has me feeling like a cup of that goulash would be in order
Beet salad and ham and cheese schnitzel. FWIW I think true “Wiener” schnitzel is always veal. I’ve been to Prague and this menu reads more Austrian than than Czech to me? Funny. I guess same empire for some years…
Yeah, you know those Habsburgs…spreading their joy wherever they went, all over Central Europe!
That. Without hesitation.
This is the only Czech restaurant left in Toronto, and we don’t have any Austrian restaurants anymore.
I agree it reads more Austrian or German. It might be because of the client base. The restaurant is located on a golf course, and most of the client base is not Czech or Czech Canadian.
Scarborough had a fairly large German, Austrian and Czech immigrant population after WW2. Those people are now really old or no longer around, and their kids have mostly intermarried.
There isn’t much demand for proper veal Wiener Schnitzel in Toronto these days.
Most of the Hungarian and Polish restaurants only serve pork or chicken schnitzel these days, and sometimes they also call their pork schnitzel Wiener, when it’s clearly just schnitzel.
I have to go to Italian restaurants if I want breaded veal these days. And it doesn’t taste like Wiener Schnitzel. LOL.
For those looking for veal Wiener Schnitzel, Wolfgang Puck keeps a nice one on the menu at Spago in Beverly Hills!
The Ranch dressing on the Prague Salad is cracking me up. I’m assuming Czechs would traditionally use a yogurt dressing on salad like most Germans and Austrians, and not Ranch. But beggars can’t be choosers here in Toronto.
I’m leaning towards the Prague Salad with Schnitzel added, the Ham and Cheese Schnitzel with salad substitution, or the Brie Schnitzel with salad substitution.
I also might share the palacsinta for dessert. Maybe also the apple strudel. I haven’t had a good apple strudel since my last visit to Austria in 2019.
I for one am happy that Austria and Hungary got together to spread their gastronomy from Lviv to Zagreb. LOL
Beef goulash, 100%
Joe’s Bakery in Austin…my favorite breakfast out. They also cook to order. Migas con chorizo for me and a bag of churros to go!
