A fan (usually a centrifugal fan) pulls air over a water soaked pad or core, thus the water evaporates producing cooler air. The act of evaporation produces cooler air. That cooler air is exchanged for hot air inside the home through an open window. Basically, you push the hot air out of the house for cooler air. I’ve learned which windows to open to get the correct balance.
Also swamp coolers do NOT work in humid climates. Growing up in the arid west, swamp coolers were the norm.
You are correct, I watch the humidity like a hawk.
Oddly, there has only been one two week stretch (a couple of years ago), when the humidity was very high and the temperature was near 110 degrees.
I was quite uncomfortable during that two week period.
I can only imagine what that was like! No fun. 🪭
Luckily the humidity has been low during this record breaking heat wave. I think its been 28 or 29 days… so far.
The weatherman is predicting some “slightly” lower temperatures for Sunday and Monday… we’ll see.
I’ve been keeping an eye on your weather down there, due to some good friends living in the area. Happy the humidity is low for you now, as that’s not always the case! Please stay cool, hydrated and healthy!
When it gets this freaking hot for days on end, I go for 'zpacho. I practically drink it for an early dinner. Quality tomatoes are key and I play with different colors of them.
Imagine all those people in the world who don’t have a/c, which is the majority.
What a time to be alive!
The UK’s normal climate puts us somewhere in the middle here. It’s not usually that hot - so homes don’t have air con. Nor does it get that cold, so our houses are poorly insulated in comparison with the more northerly European countries.
Same in Germany. I guess that whole climate change thing is much easier to ignore / believe it’s a hoax from the privileged position of an almost fully air-conditioned country
Yes… I recently purchased a Brita Water Pitcher. My previous fridge had a water dispenser through the door that produced cold filtered water. Sunshine prefers filtered water and I really didn’t want to start buying bottled water. She likes the Brita water better, so that purchase is a win-win.
My mom is Sun City. Pricey summer.
No shit. I go to Mexico and can’t believe people cry about heat here. I know no Mexican in Mexico who has AC. One of my buds in Jalisco gets sick in AC.
Yes… I imagine electric bills from this heat wave will be coming out soon.
On the bright side, the 110 (F) heat wave is supposed to break today (for a couple of days). 31 consecutive days at 110 (F) or above – previous record was 18 days set in 1974.
Unreal. Better than a hurricane, I spose.
Horrifyingly Austin needs to catch the wet side of a tropical system to create the runoff to replenish the lakes. The first three inches get absorbed rather than running into the lakes.
No longer a ‘heat wave’, I hear; it is the ‘heat season’.
So far, it is tolerable in the RNW and I am glad we bought into the solar panel ‘farm’ program our electric utility offered (we get an itty bitty rebate on our bill from them) and the mini split for the upstairs of our ‘baked potato’ house. My gardening journal of 20+ years says every year has been getting hotter, longer.
We’re now in Stage 1 fire and water restrictions, surrounded by little fires that have the potential to become big fires and we’re walking on eggshells around here. We lived through one firestorm and that was enough for us.
We have a Brita carafe that we pour into our table top electric ice maker (we were never happy with the ice maker in any refer we had) and that does the trick.
Still raining here. I’m thinking of building an ark.
(Images linked from a hosting site no longer work here since I got a new Wins 11 laptop. Interestingly, they appear in the preview panel on the right in edit/text box). They can still be viewed by opening the url.)
Here too. It lets up for a day and people are like: OMG THE SUN! (but then, it’s the monsoon )
