The Good News Thread In The Age of Corona

It’s live now: https://www.npr.org/2020/05/20/859680237/there-s-no-closure-how-a-nation-grieves-at-home

Jimmy - the pre war recruitment for the British Army was between 18 and 38 (and had to be at least 5 feet 3 inches tall). That carried on until 1916, when conscription was introduced, and the age group was widened to 18 - 41. I think the upper limit went to 50 in the closing months of the war (but men of this age would be most unlikely to have been fit enough for frontline service and most probably remained on duties in the UK).

Listened to it. Thanks. If it hadn’t been for Covid-19 I would have flown there to be with him. This thing is impacting so many in so many ways. He was cremated and his wife wants to wait to do a full military service when that’s possible again. I just hope I’ll feel safe flying (or even driving + hotels) whenever that is.

I admit I got a real kick out of counting how many of these I have eaten and some I still eat:

This article would have been better written with grades: “this is a B-, that is a D” instead of lumping so many things together. Dorittos with bagels? C’mon.

Hmm. I’ve never tried Doritos with bagels.

Here’s a bit of good news!

As long as it’s not sweet…

I went out to eat for the third time since limited re-opening of restaurants. Now instead of using the same nasty cloth towel to clean the seats AND tables they use disinfectant on all seats even the ones not sat in and separate paper towels for chairs and tables and are discarded.

All servers have masks and gloves, paper menus that are discarded, and no salt/pepper condiments on the table.

So… the thing to do is bring condiments with you? Or will they bring them if you ask? Alcohol wipes are always in my pocket in a sandwich bag.

Good news here! After being internet-LESS for 5 days due to a malfunctioning router, we are back up, with a new router and some troubleshooting. It was hell, I assure you. Although I have a million things to do, none involving the internet, I’ve been in no mood to do them…

It also added to a feeling of not being in control, as in so many other aspects of life these days. Just not good!

Stevie Ray Vaughan on the playlist now, a FAV. Just wondering of any opinions out there, as to an all time ranking as a guitar player, had he lived? Purely hypothetical and asked out of curiosity???

For us, it’s Eddy Shaver:

My neighbors across the street are having socially-distant visits nearly every evening. They set their lawn chairs a good eight feet apart, and sip cocktails and beer. A teenager in one of the families is a very talented musician, and through their windows I hear her play complex etudes on the piano and sing classical songs. The other day, she was out front with her ukulele, and another teen neighbor sat a few feet away with her own uke, and they were picking out songs together.

Two of my favorites died way too young, Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix.

I had no tv for about that time recently and the internet would barely work every five minutes. I spent a lot of time staring into space or driving around looking at trains, a major obsession.

I’m not a big ketchup eater, but I do like a bit with eggs. That or the Indian Maggi Hot and Sweet sauce, which is a spicy thin ketchup/chilli sauce type sauce.

It’s been the same Mexican restaurant in the barrio the last three times. Salt and pepper are in packets and the Texas birthright of free chips and two salsas so we’re good.

Adding some bad news here:

Interesting that everything I’ve read for the past four days or so, ignores the original “estimate” of 500 millions deaths caused by Spanish Flu in 1918. That number has been “sanitized” to now read 50 million deaths. So, lets ignore history, pick up a few guitars and sing a vibrant version or two of Kumbaya…

Stevie Ray is also on my playlist, but so is Santana, Clapton, B.B., Popa Chubby, Bonamassa, Willie’s son Lukas. The list is endless, I couldn’t pick a fav or rank them.

If western economies recover within two years, they’ll have done really , really well. IMO, of course - bearing in mind I earned my living as a lowly clerk, not an economist.

Thanks for this article! Rosé sparklers are a favorite of mine in the warm months. We definitely prefer minerality over sweetness.

If you come across a pink sparkler from the Piedmont (Piemonte) region, of course it won’t be Prosecco but we’ve had good luck with rosé bubbles from there. Also good news, isn’t it?

This one agreed with our first-of-summer lobster rolls. (Sorry for the wonky orientation on the photo.)
