Rice and beans in burritos are an American invention. Mexican burritos tend to not have them but are simpler (and better, IMO) with mainly meat and vegetables and salsa

Perhaps I would like those more. They do use flour tortillas, tho?

It’s just too much floppy dough for me.

In any case Barbacoa (stewed beef) burritos are a thing and can be excellent as well as chile verde pork burritos.

Terminology is too often tendentiously tricky, when it needn’t be. We aliterate, remembering a decades-ago meal that one participant praised as: “I liked that meat on a stick.” Here, he’d have gone with “stuff in a wrapper”. All that boringly said, we’d order tasty tacos de lengua all day long.

But why not post about it? It’s about food. It’s about a combination of two rather disparate foods (at least IMO). It’s a curious mix of two food cultures that might be interesting to others, and seems to be, based on responses already. It’s the Food Media & News board. Sort of seems like the right place. :woman_shrugging: Others said they’d try it, but maybe not everyone would. We have debates about likes/dislikes all the tIme on HO. This thread is just another discussion.

ETA: As for myself, I’ve never had Yorkshire pudding, so I don’t know what the “wrappers” are about. Depending on their thickness and ability to hold the meat filling without it all squishing out as overpacked American burritos tend to do, I might try it. Although I’d prefer a meat/veg mixture vs one with rice and beans as added filler.

There’s an underlying negativity that I guess I don’t appreciate.I would never post something about a food item that I revile or would never consider trying. Guess that’s just me. There is enough naysaying/bullying in our world as it is. I think folks have said that about the cookware discussions but it seems to be creeping into other threads as well.

Yes, for burritos they tend to use flour tortillas

It’s like a popover or even a savory eclair, a light batter-based bread traditionally baked in the fatty drippings of a roast. I don’t think anyone is adding beans and rice but the English are known for beans on toast so who knows.

I did farmers markets a couple of summers and one year there was a Yorkshire pudding stand. Similar kind of single serving Sunday dinner concept but I think it was in a bowl, not rolled up & meant to be eaten out of hand. I don’t think it took off but I’d blame Seattleites not having any connection to Yorkshire pudding and competition from Thai and Mexican food trucks rather than the food itself.

I prefer burritos with a griddled flour tortilla. Makes a big different, especially compared to steamed tortillas. The purpose is same for either, to heat up the tortilla so it can be rolled. Stewed meat burritos work better for me compared to tacos…holds up, less messy.

It’s a bit of a trend to stuff Yorkshire pudding with other stuff.

Roast beef, butter chicken, etc are sometimes found in pubs as bar food in Canada and on the UK.

This is one step further.

Yup, I’ve seen them; just hadn’t thought of them being rolled up, as I think of them as a popover as well.

I always griddle my tortillas for tacos and quesadillas. The char makes the tortillas a million times better.

I’m fascinated by the technicalities. How do delicate popovers manage to hold up to a beef stew for long enough to be hand-held and eaten?

It turns out the Yorkshire Burrito aka Yorkshire Pudding Wrap aka British Burrito, has been around since at least 2016 in the UK. It looks like the first place to serve it was located in Halifax, West Yorkshire.
