The Best Potato Chips

NYT has picked some (possibly surprising) favorites.

What are yours?

Hmmm curious … I’ve tried MAYBE one of these so hard to have an opinion. Interesting to hear others experiences.

Deep River is pretty easily available around here and a classic kettle chip, and Utz is just classic.

I do agree with them that Cape Cod and Miss Vickie’s, which are very popular kettle brands here, are greasy.

I think it comes down to personal preference. I just don’t like kettle chips - too hard and oily. Utz and Lays (and the TJ’s equivalent) are my favorites.

Zapp’s Cajun Crawtators or Dill Gator Taters, when it comes to flavored varieties.

I have never heard of most of the chips they tasted. I was shocked at their critique of my favorite, Kettle Brand. To me they taste like potatoes. Original Lays taste like Pringles.

Mine too. Until just now, I hadnt realised it was an American brand (but then, I suppose, so much is these days)

These are the only potato chips I can abide. Very thin, delicate, salty. Probz not available in the states, however.

I must say, those are some pretty ridiculous categories.

  • " Wavy chips with good looks and baked-potato flavor"?

  • " An extra-toasty classic potato chip"?

  • " A great, not-so-salty classic chip"?

What happened to the “An ugly, but great tasting wavy chip that is not too salty but still packs an umami punch” chip?

Or the “Best potato chip that is not too plain or wavy, but is kettle brewed with lard”?

Or the always popular “A great gluten free potato chip with made from non GMO potatoes that’s also Kosher certified and Halal”?

Umami isn’t an american word, so that category gets censored out

The “new” FDA only allows beef tallow, lard is verboten

Halal - that’s not really a kosher word anymore

I can only find maybe 4 or 5 of the brands listed by Wirecutter in Canada.

(Lays, Walker’s, Old Dutch, Miss Vickie’s, off the top of my head)

I’m partial to San Carlo Chips from Italy.

I don’t like kettle chips very much anymore.

I mostly buy plain Lay’s, plain Ruffles and plain Pringles.

I like paprika chips, but haven’t bought any in a couple years.

They are manufactured in Salem ,OR USA and Norwich, England.

Where is the beef tallow (preferably dipped in some raw milk) - don’t you listen to Kennedy

I guess someone must be making onion dip with a packet of onion soup mix and raw milk sour cream.

Those Grandma Utz’s are really good. And I won’t turn down a good kettle style chip–Cape Cod and Deep River are the two best the I’ve had.

Will I be booted off here if I say I don’t like potato chips  ?
