That is a very legitimate complaint. I’m more mystified by the Golden Globes categorizations, since the line between comedy movie and drama movie is a lot harder to make out. May December was nominated for best comedy; I saw it, and it is emphatically not a comedy.
Indeed.
I do think that Succession was a drama with a bit of comedy but also lots of stress and family conflict. Same with the Bear-comedy combined with interpersonal stress, but I can kind of see the comedy designation. The one I could never understand was that Barry was a comedy. Way over the top violence in every season. Not my idea of a laugh riot.
It’s what is considered a dark comedy. A very, very dark comedy. Like Fargo. Or perhaps a dramedy
Agreed. Nor was it very good IMO. Natalie Portman picks some melodramatic/campy stinkers (see also: Black Swan).
I didn’t hate it. I was impressed by Reggie-from-Riverdale. And I always like Julianne Moore.
What a trainwreck that one was! I still think her best roles were in Beautiful Girls (although I have a sore spot for that flick), and The Professional.
It was a good cast, I just don’t think they had a very good script/direction to work with.
Todd Haynes is one of my favorite directors, but this wasn’t one of his best.
My favorite scene was the pot smoking on the roof.
Should we give The Bear one more go? Our friends last night insisted that it gets better and it’s worth persevering to Season Two.
I am a big fan, although I can see why people abandon it for being too stressful to watch. I had some issues with the second season (too montage-y), but there were a couple of episodes I loved to death, like the Christmas one that everybody else hates, and Spoons.
While I watched the entire second season, I did so begrudgingly. I found it over the top, especially the famous (and popular) xmas episode,
But with everything on this great shiny earth, YMMV.
Have you given it another go?
I really like the show. The first season has a lot of scenes of people being shits to each other. The restaurant industry (among others) can be a real shitty place to work. For evidence, all you have to do is read the news. At the time the first season came out, there were a number of articles written about how real to life it was in portraying what happens in high end restaurants. I think if you’re the kind of person who seeks to avoid conflict, the show would be hard to watch. But if you can get over that, its a great show. Conflict and how you deal with it and resolve things can be central to how you develop as a person. You watch that with Carmy and other cast members. They all have complicated back stories that explain their motivations. The Christmas dinner scene sheds light on what happened between Carmy and his brother, why his brother kills himself, how Cuz fits in, Sugar’s insecurities, etc. What a family! I thought it was a great episode.

But that sounds like real life!
But seriously, I plan to give it another go
it interesting that it won all its emmy awards for only the first season, the voting bodies haven’t even gotten to season 2 yet, which imo was superior. should be a clean sweep for this show come next awards season.
Because the Emmys were postponed due to the writer’s strike.
I still haven’t watched Season 2.
This is good news!
