This didn’t quite set into a sliceable loaf. I wonder if some powdered canning pectin would help? The pear I added should have helped. Too much water in the recipe, perhaps…
The photo of my unsuccessful focaccia fell off for some reason. It’s still tasty with all that olive oil. Good breakfast.
This was utterly hilarious, thank you. The machine dishwasher died (apparently second time in two months, after being fixed under warranty two weeks ago).
Thanksgiving is a lot like Passover, but without the long ceremony preceding it. The main similarity is that when you’re done, your entire kitchen is filled with dirty dishes, pots, pans, and silverware, and your refrigerator is filled with leftovers.
I did make clean-up marginally easier by finally throwing out (well, recycling) my large “disposable” roasting pan that I had been washing for several years, with increasingly imperfect results. I figure I’m not doing any more large roasting for the two of us.
This year I made two turkey thighs and two turkey drumsticks, instead of a whole turkey (or chicken)–and discovered I didn’t like turkey dark meat. (Oh, well, Mark will eat the rest–the drumsticks were for him anyway.) Next year, drumsticks for him and something else for me.
Mark and I are a mixed marriage–he prefers jellied cranberry sauce out of a can, and I prefer the cranberry relish I make.
I tried roasting heads of garlic. The instructions said to cut the tops off, drizzle with olive oil, wrap in foil, and bake at 350F for 45 minutes. Then, it claimed, you can just squeeze the cloves out. One, I probably didn’t cut off enough or something–many of the cloves were still sealed in their paper. And two, to squeeze them out involves picking up a hot head of garlic covered in olive oil. This will not be a recurring menu item.
My aunt kept dropping loud hints to my cousin (sis) and SIL that they “can take over anytime”, which neither has any interest or intention in doing as what she really means is for them to do it exactly her way, and we have all discussed at length (when she isn’t around) that the only person actually able (or willing to indulge her) to do it that way is ME (because I usually stay with her and do the prep, and have taken over several times over the years in case of illness / mishap) — but I don’t live there
Last year, when we did early thanksgiving the weekend prior to accomodate travel, my cousin (sis) was primed to do a mini thanksgiving the day of as a dry run for “taking over” at some point. When we spoke on thanksgiving, she proudly told me she had decided to order Indian takeout — which she loudly reminded everyone about when this came up again yesterday .
Or an early exercise in preparation for Christmas for the gentiles. I am still blown away by the Bear Christmas dinner episode. Like watching a train wreck in slow motion. The beauty of thanksgiving is how non denominational it is. Everyone participates.
For whole roasted garlic you need to cut at least the top quarter of the head off. Let it cool to room temperature. The cloves should just squeeze out with slight pressure.
