Texas food & weather

The usual estimate is that it takes around 10 gallons of fresh snow to make one gallon of water. Snow that’s packed or already melting will give a higher “yield”.

That 25 gallon lobster pot came in handy. Yes, the snow was packed. As soon as it heated up we put more in and the residual heat melted the rest. .:slightly_smiling_face:

We lost power at 4:30 Tuesday morning and it came back on at 4:30 this morning. It was about 47 when it came back on this morning. No phone service or data either until just now. Still no internet over the network but the cable is up. I’m worried about another twenty four hour roll. Grocers are mostly open but limited hours. Have another rain event occurring now but just regular rain here in memorial. Fridge stayed cold and freezer warmed but not over freezing. Still trying to get back down. Also just a trickle of water downstairs but nothing at all up top. Have partially filled the tubs for flushing. Might need to go try to find bottled water when the temps stay up long enough to melt the ice. That’s all I have from here. Back to you, Dr Osteria.

Um, Mr. Boyd, everybody already knew you’re not a socialist, you didn’t need to send them any message.

If the town water is suddenly turned off that’s the homeowners’ fault? You sent them a message all right: “Our old mayor was either very drunk or a complete idiot, maybe both.”

"My husband called the electric company today and lit into them . . . "

Ha ha. Good one.

The apartment complex opened the pool for toilet flushing but we can’t get there do to the skating rink that is our stairs. We can see the pool from here and a lot of people are getting water.

We’ve got lots of rain water saved for our one thousand plants all of which are now inside. It is now toilet water. :sunglasses: :oyster:

I’ve been following the weather down there, and yikes! Truly awful and you have my utmost empathy! All I can say is that it sucks, and layer, layer, layer your clothing! Keep hydrated if possible, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Hang in there! I wish I was offering more than words…stay safe, if not exactly warm. So sorry.

On second thought ~ Maybe we all should have just gone to Cancun and let the chips fall where they may.

The travel agents’ re-spelling places such as “Can’tcun” and “Muerto Vallarta” hasn’t been a universal success then?

I think it was Rick Bayless on Top Chef asking the contestants if they’d been to Mexico and one said Cancun.

Bayless said you haven’t been to Mexico. :mexico:

I haven’t been to a grocery store since the storm but I see all the lines on tv and assume the stores are being wipeout out.

After Hurricane Ike HEB restocked much quicker then Kroger.

HEB has that large DC off I’ll of Clay in NW Houston.

I’ll wait until Monday or Tuesday.

Same goes with gasoline lines. 75 percent of the stations have gas in Spring Branch and NW Houston and no lines.

Some people see a line, panic and jump in.

A New Englander here to say how sorry I am for all that’s been happening. Extended power outages in winter are terrible. We have experienced many.

May conditions improve in a hurry.

We ventured out today to get bottled water. Turned out we didn’t have enough on hand. A couple miles down back roads into town. Roads are still snow covered but packed down and not a problem if you go slow. Dairy of any kind was completely wiped out. Bread products too. A few steaks, whole hams, and pork available in the meat aisle. Bottled water was running low. Plenty of canned goods. Gas stations were open. Our pipes did burst so we called a plumber on Wednesday and he should be here tomorrow or Sunday. If you think you’ll need a plumber, call Now and get on somebody’s list. Their lists are a mile long already and rapidly growing. Glad we called when we did. We’re still heating snow for everyday water. And the sun is finally out.:slightly_smiling_face:

My fellow Texans are really missing out here. I just took our dog outside and while I was sitting there. One of those oversized pick-ups with big tires just came speeding down the road, revving it up and zigzagging. Right behind them was another pickup dragging a kid on some kind of ski saucer with a Labrador racing next to them trying to keep up. Them came a heavy duty welding truck going too fast and zigzagging too. I give up.:slightly_smiling_face:
