Supermarket Status [Monmouth County, NJ]

I had some last Passover, and the passover before that , and the one before that, and on and on.

I forgot to thank you for the tip on going later in the afternoon. That was my plan. I’d much rather go later in the day and take may chances on what is still available. While I have a wish list of what I need I’m pretty good at substituting in the moment.

I get this at Costco. They come two in a pack.

Stopped by Lidl and Aldi today. Their produce sections were pretty bare. I guess inventory control is tough these days, a week ago Lidl was clearing out all of their produce at a very steep discount.

No one had garlic. It was literally the only thing I needed to get. Someone send some garlic over please.

Joon I have 2 heads left. You can have one if you want. I can leave it outside if you feel like taking a ten min ride.

I haven’t been to the grocery store in about a week. The best time for shoprite has been late at night before the store closes. It is not crowded at all and stocked up. This is Middletown location. Shrewsbury was decent around 630 or so the one time I went.

I have a head of garlic if you need one today @joonjoon. I’m in Aberdeen.

Do you HOs know about one of my all-time favorite items in the grocery store? Dorot! In the freezer section and it’s a staple in my house…garlic, ginger, cilantro, dill, and I think there’s a spicy pepper as well. TJs sells it but everyone else does too–it’s in the Kosher freezer at the Neptune ShopRite, but look in the veg section everywhere else. As a single person, these have been a game-changer for me–most especially since I hate wasting a bunch of herbs if I only need a little.

A trip to ShopRite during the coronavirus is a harrowing experience I don’t want to repeat

Whereas I found my trip to the Aberdeen Shoprite yesterday morning as unstressful as can be expected. Yes, some of what I wanted was out, but everyone was polite and distancing (or turning their faces away if passing you in an aisle). One has to shop somewhere, so articles that rule out a whole chain based on one experience are not helpful.

Completely agree. I didn’t find my SR (Neptune) trip to be any more stressful than the overall idea of being in ANY store was.

Funny, he doesn’t look like a whiny baby.

I take it you were speaking ironically? He looks more like a whiny baby than George Costanza.

I’ve got 2 1/2 jars down here in Houston and plenty of pasta, that’s some good stuff.

I was telling a friend about Rao’s and he says it’s too expensive but I told him to do the math, 5-6 servings with pasta, some fresh parmesan and you’ve a cheap meal. I like to cut mine with some pasta water.

Lol - me too! But these two jars were for my father-in-law and they were fairly priced at less than $6 a jar. I wish they had more.

Costco (Ocean) update:
My allergy Rx was filled, so I had to go today…geared up with mask, gloves, and wipes for the cart, and in I went—to an eerily quiet store (around 12:30). There’s a big board out in front with a list of items they’re out of, including all paper products, wipes, gloves, and disinfectants. EVERYTHING else was available, including the roasted chicken a friend requested (I sort of laughed at him when he asked). The earlier restriction on egg whites (standard in my fridge) was lifted, so I got two cartons, and the muffins my friend asked for were BOGO.

Although the greeters weren’t wiping down carts the way they were three (?) weeks ago and not wearing gloves or masks, the store itself was clean and tidy and I did see a very bored young guy with gloves and spray wiping down the cases where the meat is. Up front, they’ve taped down 3 locations with the word STOP at the edge of the first aisle, so you get in line there (I was the only one on mine) until a staff member (mask and gloves) directs you to the stop line before the belt at the register. Once the person in front of me was through, the helper took my cart, and the cashier just zapped each item with the gun, so I never even put things on the belt. I tapped my card and I was on my way. The ‘checker’ at the exit just said to have a nice day–no actual checking of receipts against merch.

The ONLY issue I had was with the other customers. Unlike yesterday at ShopRite, where I guessed at least 75% of shoppers had some sort of mask/bandanna/scarf and/or gloves, I’d say it was the reverse at Costco. Person after person with NOTHING, many of them chatting away with cell phones to their ears. Mind-boggling. And the very reason I won’t be shopping again for another couple of weeks!

did my first Cutler produce order. Went really well. Called it in late afternoon and then they called me next day to charge card with total and then I went and picked it up. Prices were basically grocery store non-sale prices. Only one charge that looked high was mangoes. But quality of everything looks to be really solid. HUGE lemons and garlic (@seal ). Already trued cherry tomatoes. They have milk, butter, Half and half, etc. Even looks like they have bakery bread too.
Pick up was a breeze- rolled up to the sign, guy comes out asks your name from 6 feet away. I popped trunk (power rear hatch really comes in handy these days), he put boxed in and away I went.
Really easy process, people were very nice over phone too. Can’t recommend it enough. Attaching list below, but anything not on that list (like lemons/limes for us, etc) is also available too- people are very helpful.

Actually @Metsfan86 that was @joonjoon who asked for the garlic. But I am thankful you are thinking of me!

I just placed a phone order with Aberdeen Livotti’s ($10 fee) that will be ready for pickup sometime tomorrow. I’m curious to see what is actually in stock as I ordered things that I haven’t been able to get anywhere (yeast and flour, specifically).

Middletown Livotti’s said they wouldn’t accept new orders till Friday.

We ordered from two county covering ‘milkmen’ at this point. Surprising what they carry.
AJ Produce is super easy to call and order from. 130 Local excellent exp. Thxs for those recs. Planning ahead in order to make waitlisting work.

My Dr tells me Sept will be the next wave of cases but medical drs. will be better equipped to address the virus with meds.

Manalapan Wegman’s line almost out to Target this morning. Aborted mission. Went to Food Emporium Marlboro on someone’s recommendation. Yes, it was empty. But, no Purell, no cart wipes, everything 50% more expensive than Wegman’s. Didn’t feel happy inside the store. Aborted mission. I have a lot of beans and rice in my cupboards.
