I saw someone call this the new abnormal which feels appropriate.
LOVE IT!!
I’m starting to believe Supermarkets are loving this crisis! They can open their doors each day with EMPTY aisles. They can bump prices on commodities and food stuffs with impunity. They can cut staff hours by the thousands. And still report month over year profits in the millions of dollars.
Something is very, very wrong with this “new normal”.
Another Aberdeen Shoprite trip.
They were totally out of Kikkoman soy sauce (except for two of those red-topped dispenser bottles). I ended up with Sushi Chef, since everything else had sugar (or worse, corn syrup). What kind of weird shortage is soy sauce?!
Other stuff was weirdly spotty; no Shoprite ketchup in the size I wanted (though plenty in other sizes), no Temptee cream cheese (though plenty of other brands), etc.
I didn’t even see a spot on the shelf for Knudsen’s cherry juice (regular, not tart); I hope they haven’t discontinued it.
The bulk grain, nuts, etc., in the organic section are back.
They had lots of Goya stuff, which I will not be buying in the forseeable future. (As a Puerto Rican, I don’t see Puerto Ricans as being "blessed to have a leader like Trump. " YMMV.)
They had a reasonable amount of eggs, though not full cases like they used to.
Refrigerated juices also somewhat depleted, though at least some of pretty much everything.
In summary, I guess you can find most things, though not in huge quantities, and I wouldn’t wait until you’re absolutely out of some staple before you buy it.
(Oh, and I did find corn tortillas in the Hispanic section.)
Shoprite (Aberdeen) has reopened its self-serve salad bar.
The announcements in the Neptune ShopRite yesterday indicate that the new WORLD CLASS store in Belmar will open in November (they’re hiring).
Wow…I honestly didn’t see that coming. Not just Shoprite, I mean in general I didn’t think salad bars or buffet’s were ever going to be a “thing” again.
When I watched this video about vegas buffets I immediately said “I give them two weeks” Well, I was wrong but only by a few weeks.
That store looks huge!!! I can’t believe how fast it went up.
Where is the new World Class store? And is it all ShopRite brand items?
I’m not @CurlzNJ but it’s on 18th and Rt 35 in Belmar/Wall - the old Foodtown diagonally across the street from the current ShopRite. Rumor has it that the old SR is going to become a Dearborn Farms store. I’m not exactly sure why as Dearborn is owned by SR and would be it’s own competition.
Don’t SRs compete too? I see SR is taking over the gigantic Sears location in Middletown when they rebuilt across the same highway a few years back. SR is flush with cash it would appear.
Is the Wegmans even opening in Middletown?
I wondered what that building was going to become! And are they ultimately going to demolish the rest of the building that Dunkin’ Donuts is in? It’s a such a crazy angle that I can’t imagine that they are going to leave it that way!
And what is Dearborn Farms claim to fame?
Of course they do, and there’s another World Class SR less than 5 miles away. These 2 buildings are across the street from each other and it seems redundant to me to have both especially since SR sells Dearborn products.
I’m not sure what’s happening with DD but I would think it will be incorporated into SR. It does look funny kind of handing out there.
I’ve been to Dearborn in Middletown a couple of times. To me it’s sort of like Delicious Orchards.
Why would you think Shop-Rite would only carry its own brand? As an example, pre-pandemic, the enormous “World Class Shop-Rite” in Marlboro was nearing the end of a total renovation, interior and exterior. in a space that’s enormous. I haven’t been inside since early March, but I presume the reno has been completed. Like all supermarkets, they carry a wide range of brands, including their own which was rebranded several months ago as “Bowl & Basket.”
By the way, I’ve been using their curbside no contact pick-up since June when they started offering it again. They’ve worked out the kinks and are doing a very good job. Next day pick-up with times throughout the day is always available, and scheduling up to five days ahead is also possible.
Edited to add: I see others have already answered your question.
ShopRite may open a store in the Sears location and close the one across the street. That’s what Aldi did when it moved into the old Pathmark location in Hazlet a year or so ago.
I think that is the plan. However the Sears bldg is getting into Costco/Sams Club/ BJs sized space don’t you think?
It is redundant. Agreed.
