Sort of like humans.
Can the “Summarize” button be disabled in our version of the software?
Yeah. Just having that stupid little Gemini logo there makes me FEEL like I’m being spied on. I dislike the idea the entire public contents of this board have already been sucked up by these companies, but there seems
to be very very little we can do about it. No doubt there are tools that keep the most aggressive bots from downloading the entire corpus of the site wholesale, but a bot that slowly, methodically trawled through the messages one at a time might escape detection. If it can be found in a search engine, AI has it already, several times over.
What we CAN do, at least, is maybe not encourage the use of these engines by offering folks a button presss to access them.
If I write a lengthy restaurant or film review, I hope it will find an appreciative audience, but I want my words to be MY WORDS. Not what Google thinks the just of them are. If my writing is too long or unclear, people won’t read it, I’ll get no replies or lines and that’ll be that. I would prefer that little ’summarize’ feature be unavailable on posts I’ve written.
I’m not gonna take my ball and go home with it or anything. There’s no place ‘safe’ from this stuff. But it’d be nice to not have to invite it into this place SPECIFICALLY.
For myself, I’d really appreciate if that button disappeared. Using whatever analytical tools as an admin to flag potential spam and bots is fine. I’d just rather not encourage people to shove our conversations into that electronic maw literally right next to the conversations themselves.
Tl;dr (summary, no AI needed
) use whatever tools are needed to keep this a pleasant, spam/bot free place. Quietly discourage LLM-forward features accessible by users which encourage use of AI in lieu of reading the actual posts being summarized.
Either way, @hungryonion, et al, your efforts at keeping this place a tidy and pleasant place to be are much appreciated.
The function has been used for a total of 22 times. So there isn’t really a lot of people using it. Hence it is disabled.
