When did the “Summarize” function get activated? I feel like I just noticed it. The widget seems to indicate that it’s powered by some kind of AI/LLM, which I have no interest in ever being a part of. This is a very sad development, given that there is no ethical use case for LLMs, as well as their destruction of the environment due to energy and water abuses. How does one opt out of this?
I thought you were talking about the button next to it, which used to be called Summarize iirc, and it would compress the topic to top replies by some method.
I had not noticed the AI Summarize button until you pointed it out, so thank you. I agree, I do not want to be a part of training it with content provided here. For folks whose names are publicly shared, I imagine there may be further concerns.
Yes, that’s what I meant by content. There are recipes, photographs, menu planning, and more. Also, right now we can identify bots - I’d rather not have ones that start sounding like our own posts.
I am guessing it’s the software itself, not @hungryonion@sck making a site choice
I have been seeing setting change warnings all over the place of late (fb & chrome just for starters) about sneaky AI changes that you have to go through hoops to opt out of
I run several Facebook groups (mostly food related), and you do have to jump through hoops to turn that GD AI function off. I had to go through my app vs. my laptop to even get to that menu.
AI was added last week as a test on a. summarizing topics and b. spam fighting. Haven’t yet seen a conclusion of the pros and cons one way or the other.
This is a public forum, whether we use AI explicitly or not as a forum, AI bots are already scraping the forum, just like search bots have been scraping the forum for years. That is something beyond our control. E.g. Reddit would be a prime example. In general, anything you post on the public Internet, unless its completely inaccessible by the public, search engines and AI will read it. This is happening whether this site has the summarize topic or spam fighting features, or not.
This is true. Web crawlers find everything and store it, and they’ve been doing so for years before most of us even knew about them. Not much to be done about it except to go 100% off-grid, including getting rid of your cell phone. Tracking is everywhere, including in your car if it’s a newer model.
Interesting. My understanding was always that there was no way to voluntarily close an account here. You just had to stop posting. Good to know that’s not the case. Thank you for that at least.
