Where is Darth Vader?
Wow. 176 CAD. Not inexpensive.
(Gen X here) I love old dishes. Only limitations in storage space prevent me from having a truly obscene collection.
In my apartment, my everyday dishes were some modern-made but retro-feeling Fishs Eddy things, until I got hooked on mid-century Fire King dishes. I have a collection of 50s blue Fire King dishes (the color is called Azurite) in the square Charm pattern, as well as some turquoise and delphite Fire King dishes from the same era. They are my every day users. No dishwasher in my apartment, so it’s all hand wash.
I don’t have room for holiday dishes there, but last year I bought a full china set at a second-hand store in PA (Japanese made, probably 50s or 60s) and it sits in a box until I have more room for it. It’s also pale blue. I sighed when I came across it because I knew I would be unable to pass it by, as impractical as it was.
Finally, over the past couple years I’ve started collecting Depression-era glass servingware (cake platters, pretty serving bowls in many shapes, dessert cups, etc) all in pink, inexplicably, and I keep it all at my mother’s house. I’ve had a few small parties at her house for her friends where I bring it out to use, and everyone always remarks how much of that stuff they used to have, but they got rid of it all.
In the house I grew up in, we now have a full set of Pfaltzgraff Winterberry for the holidays that was a gift from my mother’s best friend. I’ve added to it a bit since she got it, but what I’ve added has been purchased used. Since Pfaltzgraff was founded (and for a long time made) in my home town, it’s everywhere here and easy to find at second-hand shops. The set lives in the basement until Thanksgiving, when we bring it up and start enjoying it through about Dec 28, when it goes back down to rest until next year.
That probably works better than Ozempic.
He got broken, by Luke.
As someone who was in Grade 2 when The Empire Strikes Back came out, who wore her hair like Princess Leia, with 2 buns, as was the trend, who had the Princess Leia action figure,( my only action figure), I’m guessing this decorative plate’s market was mostly for the ladies who liked the romance and maybe also the girl power element in Star Wars.
Most of those ladies probably saw Darth as the Villain.
I haven’t seen any Star Wars movies since Return of the Jedi.
Ewoks were pretty darned cute.
We found a Darth Vader cookie jar at a thrift store and gifted it to the son-in-law. He likes it. It’s fairly large, but Darth’s head/helmet is an odd shape for holding things, so it only fits a few cookies. Don’t have a pic, 'cause it’s a hunnert miles away.
Franklin Mint? I have a Scarlett O’Hara plate my mother once gave me (why, I don’t know…).
Wow, you know Alice Waters and Paul Aratow? I was a Cal undergrad but never dined at Chez Panisse until 2 years ago and have returned once. I consider it probably the best restaurant I’ve eaten at. I consider myself lucky to live in this part of the country, and also lucky to eat pizza at Cheese Board across the street.
Actually my friend was Alice’s partner at the outset, Tom Guernsey. He is missed.
So cool to know these people, Tim!
True, but sadly past tense. Tom died in the eighties as I recall. He was my designated “big brother” in school (Claremont Men’s College, now Claremont McKenna College). I have not remained in touch with schoolmates, and that era is a surreal dream.
That is beyond special.
Subversive.
More like, me not able to control my consumption.
I love that cup!
Thanks, Piglet.
