Here in NY we’re getting ready for what could be up to 18 inches of snow or more. I’m sure a lot of HOs are battening down the hatches as well. We are expecting to be snowbound Sunday and part of Monday and would like to do some family cooking projects. Thinking we’ll make lasagna with homemade pasta sheets. We also have been meaning to make focaccia - seems like a good a time as any to make some to nosh on and some to freeze. My new ice cream attachment for my KA mixer is chilling, and we have a half batch of homemade Magnolia cupcakes in the freezer that my kid wants to frost and decorate. What will you be cooking or baking while it snows?
I want to make pate aux pommes de terre on Sunday (worst day of the storm where I am) but I’ll have just cooked dinner for 18 on Saturday night, so I predict I’ll be too tuckered out to play in the kitchen .
Plus, I have to do all the shoveling ![]()
I never believe the snowstorm hype (because it’s usually bullshit), but I’m set for food & drink, and I have a lot of chocolate chip cookie recipes to try. Also eggs, milk and what I need to make bread, so if there’s a need for French toast, I’m good.
I never understood what compels presumably sane folks to shop clear the shelves of bread, milk, eggs or other stuff… just bc they possibly won’t be able to shop for ONE, maybe one and a half days. Really? Is your kitchen so rudimentarily stocked at all times you need a storm to have basics in the house?

I got home from work last night, fed the cats…and immediately put my coat back on to go back out to Market Basket for the veggies and dairy that I needed…thankfully, a short shopping list since I have a freezer full of protein. I had originally planned to go tonight (Friday) after work, but knew that MB will be insane (and I won’t go anywhere near MB on Saturday prior to the Patriots in the AFC Championship game on Sunday!)
As I was driving in to work, I knew I wanted a “comfy food” meal on Sunday as the snow accumulated up here (anywhere from 12-18+" north of Boston). Remembered I had a chuck roast in the freezer, so that’ll get taken out to defrost for Mom’s Lemon Pot Roast on Sunday. Definitely not football food, but it’ll make the house smell great and my tummy happy! Boiled potatoes and carrots alongside with the lemony gravy.
I DO want to try and get some baking done, and have blueberries to use, so perhaps something with them might work.
Remember when everyone duct-taped their windows? We are an odd species.
I seem to have forgotten that folly. I do remember my PIC cleaning pieces of mail for a not insignificant period of time.
Oh, that was fun, too.
Happy to share any gift links from this timely NYT feature:
But to answer your OP — pasta is on the menu at casa lingua as well, albeit not so much of a cooking project. Just a big bowl of comforting pappardelle ai funghi e tartufo with lemony arugula salad on the side.
IF we pick up another roti chicken at Sam’s before Sunday I might make more stock.
Maybe I can talk my dude into making another batch of his luscious pistachio ice cream… ![]()

I’ve inadvertently been stuck for a couple of weeks without being able to get groceries, and have never suffered, except for some cravings. I don’t know why people don’t learn to “do” a pantry. It’s not even survivalist …
We’re going out for a large dinner Saturday night, and I expect a ton of leftovers for Sunday. Mrs. P will probably make herself blackened shrimp salad. There will be espresso martinis and plenty of wine ![]()
I take pride in keeping a well-stocked home, not only for food but also for cleaning supplies, paper products, batteries, soap and shampoo, etc. Not everyone may have the space or budget to do this, but honestly I feel that it’s a necessity. Running out for last minute things drives me crazy, not to mention that panic buys can get expensive. We do a monthly check and place an order from Walmart or Amazon for household supplies. I grocery shop weekly for fresh items.
That said, my SO took a lovely steak out to defrost for tomorrow night, and I’ll make a nice pot of Italian-American “Sunday gravy” this Sunday as I don’t plan to leave the house (that’s the day we are forecast for the worst of the snow here in NYC)
My sister lives within walking distance, so if my nieces want to trudge through the snow to my home, we will make some Valentine cupcakes. Because of course I have three kinds of sugar, several pounds of butter, and enough holiday themed sprinkles to stock a Carvel for several months.
I’m not expecting any seriously cold weather in my area but I really want to make this recipe which looks very comforting for winter weather:
Ooh! Love the sound of that shrimp salad. What seasoning does she use for the shrimp?
Oh wow. That looks incredible. I had to stop the video because I got PTSD from watching her use the mandolin without a guard though.
I have scars from my encounter with one and haven’t use it since.
Thanks! Great list!!
We’re going to venture to Costco tomorrow morning during executive hours. May live to regret it! And thanks @iluvcookies for the booze reminder! Lol
LOL! Our liquor cabinet and wine fridge are pretty well stocked year-round, thanks to my SO.
Good luck at Costco ![]()
