Small town diners and restaurants outside the GTA [Ontario]

My friend was mentioning she was planning to stop by Jim’s Lunch in Princeton, ON for a chocolate milkshake and a toasted Western, while she traveled to Toronto via country roads.

I haven’t been to Jim’s Lunch.

I’m going to check it out one of these days.

I’ll also post some small town diner meals in this thread.

If it wasn’t for the long drive and I have more spare time at my disposal, I would love to try out and eat at every ’ winery-eatery ’ in the Niagara wine region!!

I haven’t even been to Niagara Region since the fall of 2019. I hate that stretch of highway between Hamilton and St Catharines.

For a greasy spoon, I like Diner 29 in St Catharines.

I totally agree with you about the traffic!
Sadly, I have to experience the frustration again come October, since my Brother-in-law and I have a ‘joint birthday bash’ luncheon booked at Pearl Morissette. Saturday, late morning traffic could be brutal?!

Go early to beat the traffic, and take a nap in your car once you get there! :joy:

I got take-out smoked pork hock, pig’s tail and rib dinner and schnitzel dinner at the Olde Heidelberg Inn in Heidelberg tonight.

The restaurant recently changed hands according to this Instagram post.

The staff were the regular staff who have been around for a while, which was good to see.

The schnitzel tasted good but was a little tough. The ribs, pig’s tail, and cole slaw were good.

The vegetables were frozen peas, carrots and green beans or sauerkraut. Not inspired, but I didn’t expect inspired. :joy:

We haven’t had the smoked pork hock yet. It’s possible to order their meats to take home, hot or cold, without sides.

I also picked up a turkey, some dinner rolls and breads at the Stemmler’s butcher shop across the road. Impressive selection of German sausages and cold cuts. Nice shop.

I didn’t visit Country Pantry, which seemed to have a lot of customers.

That headline “Heidelberg Restauranteurs will finally get some rest” caused some consternation!
We’re in Heidelberg today - the 'real’one!
Also planning on smoked pork hock!

Lucky you!
I am unable to travel to Europe these days.

My last trip to Europe was to Germany and Austria in March 2019. I miss it.

I like German underwear and socks, so I stocked up at a couple nice department stores in Munich. A few pair are still kicking. :joy:

We did a small loop yesterday, from London, ON to Stratford, New Hamburg, New Prussia, St Clements and Heidelberg.

I will be returning to Waterloo Region to try finally the Broasted Chicken at Anna Mae’s, a Mennonite restaurant in Millbank, in a few weeks.

I look forward to seeing your trip report.

We liked the smoked pork hock, which I served tonight.

I will order Smoked Pork Hock from the Concordia Club in Kitchener next time, to compare.

I’m heading to Sarnia, Ontario today.

If anyone has a favourite spot, please mention it!

So far these places have been recommended

Family Village

John’s (since 1964)

Cait’s Café in Goderich.

I ordered the Italian Panini today, which really hit the spot. $12.99 before tax.

Beside Pearl Morissette, hands down - " The Pine, Creemore '!

I stopped by The Flour Mill in St. Mary’s today.
It’s a café and gourmet shop that offers brunch on Sundays.

I picked up some frozen Terroni gnocchi and a house-made frozen beef and mushroom pie ($60, a large pie).

Brunch menu for another time.

It’s closed Mondays.

I visited the Dresden Night Market today.

I ended up buying a ton.
Honey and cinnamon creamed honey from Sycamore Farms.

A Jalapeño Cheese pretzel. The dough wasn’t dense or chewy like a NYC or German pretzel. I’m still craving a good German soft pretzel

A cortado and a pound of Columbian coffee

An apple crumble pie and some oatmeal raisin cookies

Maple walnut fudge and festive trail mix

A Ghanaian beef pie (it looked like a Cornish pasty, nice seasoning)

Some mini cheesecakes.

A pound of chocolate.
