Simple, Amazingly Fresh Coastal Food You Miss…

You’re welcome!

I enjoyed some Lake Perch tacos and lemon caper butter seared Pickerel at Beach Street Station in Goderich, Ontario on Lake Huron tonight.
Here is the Pickerel.

They were not disguised as abalone. The separate flavors were distinct.

I had sand dabs, simply prepared, at a high-end restaurant in Monterey, and really enjoyed them. Shortly after, I was in San Diego, and had them on Coronado Island, this time at a fast food restaurant, and they were even better! Too bad that they’re only available on the west coast.

Growing up in SoCal use to get all kinds of seafood because my dad, uncles and brother went fishing as a hobby…but I was always skunked and never caught anything, seriously blanked until I was about 12 or 13 so I gave up. I caught a blue gill in a lake. When my family didn’t go fishing, my uncles came over with fresh fish because they had no idea how to cook some of it…but my mom did. Or had too much.

The other things abalone was so plentiful, you could pick it up off the beach. Our backyard was filled in left over abalone shells…sometimes used as de facto ashtrays for BBQs. Now, the laws are very restrictive and getting the abalone is brutal and dangerous. Free diving without gear off slippery rocks…yeah, no. Every couple of years you read about someone dying. A buddy still goes and I keep thinking I hope he’s safe.

The other thing that still happens in SoCal is the Dory Fishing fleet in Newport Beach. My family would go and get fresh fish. Rockfish and spiny lobster and stuff I don’t remember. Didn’t realize it was going on since the 1890s…one of the few really old things behind the Orange Curtain…and gets little attention. Yeah, SoCal HATES old stuff. In any case, going down in a few weeks and will check it out again.

Now that I’m in NorCal, it’s all about the Dungeness crab, oysters near Point Reyes, sand dabs and petrale sole. Usually crab feed every couple of years. It’s not a regret, but I sometimes wish I took to fishing as a kid. But there’s plenty of fish around…and no cleaning fish. I even had to do that, even not catching fish.

When I visit my brother in Houston, I love the selection of shrimp, red snapper and dorados. I got a temp fishing license and caught some flounder. I just love being by an ocean/golf. Still, I equally love the many freshwater lakes in rivers in my area. Bluegill, perch, northern and walleye are my faves. Got huge sturgeons in a river I frequent; but I won’t keep them. Take too long to develop.
